It has been a busy Spring at Syros Cats. We are lucky to have had remarkably engaged volunteers, many of whom had helped before, so they could get straight back into the tasks and as well as caring for our cats, catching, sterilising and releasing strays, they have managed to lay new pathways, strip the land of winter weeds, refresh our signage and tidy the garden. Our long-suffering landlord has planted new fruit trees for us and keeps us supplied with fresh fruit and vegetables. He has acquired more chickens, so we can sometimes add delicious fresh eggs to our breakfast fare too. And this year we can all enhance our culinary efforts with the mint, oregano, sage, chives, parsley, thyme and celery that are now growing around our sanctuary. Our lavender plants are sadly past their best but a friend is growing us new cuttings, so we can replenish our field in the autumn. We use the lavender to make lavender bags, which we offer to tourists, so this provides a functional crop as well as an aesthetic and scented walkway.
In short, our homebase is now looking fabulous, offering a calming space that both volunteers, visitors and felines can enjoy. Indeed, our visitor season started early. Tourism in Syros has increased and more visitors are telling us they have chosen Syros just because we are here and they are unlikely to find neglected cats in Kini. We are very flattered!
