Good evening,

Welcome to this week's issue of the Wye Organic newsletter. It has been another hot week here on the farm. Barry is delighted as it has been perfect weather for making hay!

This week, we want to tell you:

  • Barry has been busy moving livestock and making hay

  • what will be in our boxes next week

  • what's left to buy in our veg pack shed

  • and what we're cooking, or even drinking, in this week's recipe!

Cows galore!

We are trying something new this year...

The heat is not just difficult for us humans, it is difficult for our livestock too! To keep our cows happy and cool(er) during this weather, we have combined our autumn and spring cattle, making there 140 cows together in the field!

This may sound counter-intuitive, but it is so they all have access to the river at all times. Most of our river meadows are also lined by trees, providing that much needed shade.

Making more hay

Barry's best friends this week? The tractor, mower, rake and baler. Thank goodness the tractor has aircon!

Thanks to them (and Barry...) we now have 844 bales of organic hay for our cattle! It is not quite enough to see us through the winter yet, but it is about 600 more than we had this time last year!

Recipe of the week

In all of our veg boxes next week, you will find the ingredients to make a refreshing drink.

Created in the US in the early 1900's this soft drink rose to fame in the UK in post WWII in Britain. In this week's recipe, we are making it with cherry tomatoes and finishing it off with a few slices of our spring onions. Perfectly refreshing on a hot summer's day.
