During ECC, a heart-lung-machine temporarily replaces the functionality of the heart and lungs. The machine transports blood from the upper right chamber of the heart to a special container called an "oxygenator" and then it "propels" it, with pressure, to the arterial territory of the organism; doing the function of the lungs, oxygenation and that of the heart impulse of the blood with pressure.
Thus, thanks to ECC, we can stop the heart, section some of its tissues (atria, ventricles) and work inside it. This is what is commonly known as “Open Heart Surgery.”
