Emmy and Gimli cuddled up in their new home

It’s already shaping up to be another busy year for us here at Syros Cats, but before we look ahead, we’d like to take a moment to reflect on the year just gone. Thanks to your continued support, we’ve been able to help many cats in need, from new arrivals requiring urgent care to those now settling into their forever homes. Read on for some of their stories, along with a look back at 2025 in numbers.

2025 In Stats!

Though our cats are always much more than numbers to us, sometimes those numbers help tell an important story.

It’s been a busy and productive year, so Jacky has put together a snapshot of how your generous donations, alongside support from sponsors, visitors and partner charities, have helped shape our work over the past 12 months.

Urgent Appeal: Help for Houdini

Image description

Houdini is still his mischievous self!

Houdini is struggling with chronic ear infections that simply won't clear up. The cause? A deep-seated polyp in the ear canal. He requires specialised surgery to remove the growth and finally live pain-free.

If you are able to contribute towards Houdini’s treatment, we would be very grateful. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference.

Medical Marvels: The Road to Recovery

Scared Lumi being treated at Syros Cats

We believe that every cat deserves the chance to live a healthy life on their own terms. For many of the cats we care for, that means returning to a free-roaming life once they are well enough. Lumi is one such cat. Read on to meet Lumi and hear her story.

An update on Luke and… John!

Image description

Luke and....John (oops!)

In our previous newsletter, we introduced Luke and Luna, though we have since discovered that “Luna” is, in fact, a boy! So we’d like to reintroduce them: Luke and John.

Both had a difficult start in life and arrived in poor condition, understandably wary of human contact. At first, they were not at all sure about the care they were receiving. Bathing after bouts of diarrhoea and anti-fungal baths were not their idea of fun.

However, with time, patience and consistency from our volunteers, they began to relax and trust. Slowly but surely, they have transformed from frightened, fragile kittens into confident and cuddly young cats.

They are now healthy, strong and have returned to their colony, a great outcome for two cats who likely would not have survived winter without intervention.

In Loving Memory: Koukla and Brida

Brida

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Koukla and Brida.

Koukla was slowly showing signs of her age in the Autumn, and the team stepped in to help give her hydration and love. However, she was ready to rest and passed away peacefully in the arms of one of our volunteers in the night. She was one of a kind, and will be missed.

Despite our best efforts to shield Brida from the harsh winter, her ongoing respiratory issues and vulnerability were too much for her tired body. She passed away peacefully, knowing she was loved. Brida survived against the odds as a sickly kitten in 2020 with a long list of health problems. Her breathing issues were so severe when we first rescued her she was not allowed to play or get stressed. After many rounds of antibiotics and even antifungals her weakened chest grew strong enough for her to have a normal kittenhood. Her weight gain was very slow and her spay surgery was delayed until she was fighting fit. As an adult cat, newcomers could never imagine how sick she was as she grew into a handsome strong looking calico, unless they heard her cough. Her strong presence and will was respected by us all. For many winters she would climb into one of our indoor spaces as if to say "this is mine now, you can write my name on the board". As soon as the weather improved she stopped coming indoors at night. She will be greatly missed by all of us.

Meet Janusz!

Image description

Janusz on an adventure!

Janusz is such a sweet kitty with a real love for adventure. Like a true hiking cat, he’ll happily follow volunteers wherever they go, to the beach, around the village, or on walks through the hills.

One day he tagged along with volunteers Kristin and Chris,  heading towards Delfini Beach, a not insignificant distance. He walked the whole way with them, happily trotting alongside the entire time. He has quite the explorer’s spirit!

But when the adventures are over, Janusz transforms into a champion snuggler. He loves curling up in your arms and will happily spend hours sleeping beside you. He’s also playful and curious, always ready to chase a string or bat around a toy, and he gets along well with other cats too.

Janusz would love a safe home where he can enjoy both adventure and affection. If you can imagine a little orange explorer following you on walks by day and curling up beside you at night, Janusz might be the perfect companion.

Big news for our furry friends!

Changes are coming! For the first time ever, the EU is introducing unified laws to protect cats and dogs across Europe.

As many of you know, the "rules" for animal welfare can vary a lot from one place to another. This new legislation is a huge step toward making sure every cat, especially strays and sanctuary residents, gets the protection they deserve.

What does this mean for our Syros cats?

Better Tracking: A unified microchip system to keep them safe, even after they fly to their forever homes abroad.

Fairer Rules: Stronger pressure on local authorities to take responsibility for stray populations.

High Standards: More accountability for animal housing and care (something we take very seriously here!).

While we stay busy on the ground with food, vet runs, and chin scratches, we’re also keeping a close eye on these legal updates to ensure our sanctuary remains a safe and leading light for animal welfare on Syros.

Want to help us stay ahead of the curve? Your donations help us maintain the high standards these new laws are aiming for. https://syroscats.com/donations/

Thank you all for your continuing support in 2026.
