Explore The Waste Land on May 12th |
|
The Waste Land is a poem by T. S. Eliot, widely regarded as one of the most important English-language poems of the 20th century and a central work of modernist poetry. Published in 1922, the 434-line poem first appeared in the United Kingdom in the October issue of Eliot’s magazine The Criterion. Among its famous phrases are “April is the cruellest month”, “I will show you fear in a handful of dust”, and “These fragments I have shored against my ruins”.
Critics have said that The Waste Land does not follow a single narrative or feature a consistent style or structure. It shifts between voices of satire and prophecy, and features abrupt and unannounced changes of narrator, location, and time, conjuring a vast and dissonant range of cultures and literatures.
It doesn't exactly sound an easy read, does it? But what is this poem, one of the most famous in the English canon, all about? Come join us to decipher this mammoth poem through a dramatic reading! We will be acting out stanzas and pulling out lines to perform different emotions and truly grasp the intention and mystery behind Elliot's masterpiece.
Whether you like the poem or hate it, we want to see you get your teeth into it!'

Back by Popular Demand! Sandra Villani's Clowning Workshop on June 9th! |
|
Sandra says: "This is an introductory clowning masterclass; with the use of games, movement, sound, silence, stillness and so much more. In this workshop we will explore your clown within!
The aim is to conjure a magical mini show from simply being.
For this masterclass, no clowning or comedy experience is necessary, just a willingness to be open to the moment.
It’s probably a good idea to wear comfy clothes and shoes, so you can move around freely.
I came to clowning through the tutelage of a wonderful clown, Didier Dantois at his Sacred Art of Clowning school. Since then I have clowned around from time to time.
Come and play!”

A Holy Wholly Happy Ending was Had by All! |
|
Everyone really enjoyed reading the play, by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer, based on Vicar of Dibley scripts. It was a lot funnier than most of us remembered, and, watch this space, we may have a director for later in the year.

STC Writers' Group Inaugural Meeting |

The first meeting of the Writers' Group was a definite success, bringing together like-minded and creative individuals each with their own style of writing, from an already published author to a writer who has never read their work to anyone. The evening flew by as everyone introduced themselves and talked about the stages of their writing and how such a group may help them.
The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday May 28th. Do come along if you would like to join.
Thursday May 28th at 7.30 pm (doors open 7 pm). FREE FOR ALL Vinters Studio 2, 1b Sunnyhill Road, SW16 2UG For more information see our website. |
