Spring Term 2026

Dear Friends,

The Pastors’ Academy at London Seminary exists to help pastors to keep learning and growing. Here are some of the events and opportunities that we have coming up:

Ethics Online Reading Group

This term Matthew Mason will be leading the group through 'Defending Shame: It’s Formative Power in Paul’s Letters' by Te-Li Lau (Baker Academic, 2020).

Matthew writes:
'Shame is frequently viewed negatively, as something that is always bad for people. Evoking shame is often seen as manipulative or coercive. However, Te-Li Lau argues that although shame is a painful emotion it plays a vital role in ethical formation. Professor Lau first draws on various cultural understandings of shame to define it more closely. But the heart of his book is a careful examination of the theme of shame in 1 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians and Philemon. He then brings Paul’s teaching to bear on contemporary understandings of shame.

As we read and discuss this book, we will gain a deeper understanding of a key aspect of Pauline ethics, and of how the Apostle’s teaching on shame can positively shape our lives and ministries today.'

Study Day – The Beatific Vision
Matthew will teach a day in Leyland on 23rd June looking at the beatific vision. The day will consider the Bible’s teaching on our glorious hope of seeing God face to face, examine some historic accounts of the beatific vision, and explore some of the implications of our future hope for our lives now. You can book for this here.

New member of the pastoral support team

Daryl Jones

We have been looking to fill the gap in our pastoral support team in the south since John Benton retired. I am delighted to announce that Daryl Jones will be joining the team to cover the south west region, starting in the early summer. Having worked as a civil engineer and for UCCF, Daryl spent almost 25 years serving as a pastor in Bristol, Aylesbury, and Liverpool. Since 2013 he has been the Mission Director of Grace Baptist Mission.  Daryl already has close connections to London Seminary having lectured on the Pastoral Training Course, and his wife Julia runs the Flourish course.

Daryl writes: 'It's a joy to be joining the Pastoral Support Team. I know from nearly 25 years of being a pastor and then nearly 15 caring for missionaries that ministry has many challenges. When I was a pastor I found it helpful to talk with those longer in ministry than myself, and at times their advice was sought after and much needed. This resulted in problems solved, relationships restored and ongoing fruitful work. My desire is to get alongside those who are grappling with the many challenges of ministry and to help and encourage them so they can continue in ministry.'

If you are looking for a way to pursue deeper theological study alongside your ministry, then do consider the ThM we offer with Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. You can find more information and video interviews with current students here. We have just had a course on Paul’s prison epistles with Robbie Booth from Union Theological College in Belfast.

In June (23rd-26th) I will be teaching on ‘The Representative Kingship of Christ’, looking at Davidic typology in the gospels, from there going to Old Testament David narratives, and drawing out the dogmatic significance of the light they shed on the person and work of Christ. If you have questions about the ThM, do get in touch. For more information about joining the programme or auditing a week, click here.

Every blessing,

Garry Williams
