March 2026

Welcome to the latest Youth & Children Update!

Lent Appeal 2026: Aberlour

Image description

We've announced our Lent Appeal 2026 – and this year it has a specific focus on children and young people in Scotland.

Aberlour Children’s Charity works to provide tailored support to families facing poverty, disadvantage and discrimination. It provides support at the earliest opportunity by offering a range of services across Scotland, utilising the voices of those impacted to create and implement tools for change. The charity has been in operation for just over 150 years, with a long and varied history, although giving every child the best possible start in life has always been at the heart of what they do. Find out more on our website.

Climate Awareness Days

Image description

It's World Water Day on 22 March, and this year the theme is Water and Gender, with the tagline 'Where Water Flows, Equality Grows' – because the collection and use of water disproportionately affects women throughout the world. From the World Water Day resources page you can download an Activation Kit aimed at children and young people that includes activities and discussion points, and a 'Post-It Wall of Water Facts'. Access the resources page here.

Earth Hour is at 8.30pm on 28 March. Spending an hour without lights can be enough to capture the attention of children and young people, but Earth Hour also asks us to 'give an hour for earth', suggesting a range of ways you can do this, from cooking a plant-based meal to cycling or taking a nature walk. The 'nature' activities look particularly good for inspiring children and young people. Find out more here.

Mothering Sunday

Image description

Mothering Sunday can feel tricky to pitch well. The Mother’s Union offers an outline of a service, with prayers, readings, and a reflection. Worship Words offers reflections on being sensitive and inclusive alongside liturgical resources, plus a complete ‘Cafe Church' style service.

Journeying Towards Easter

We have now added ideas and resources to our Lent to Pentecost web page that will take you all the way to Pentecost Sunday. Here are some highlights for the rest of Lent and for the Easter weekend. See the resources page here.

Image description

Journeying with Jesus from Parenting for Faith offers seven posts with accompanying sheets to take you through Lent. Palm Sunday is covered in the third post, and then the events of Holy Week, so this is a particularly good series if you start it later in Lent! Find out more here

Image description

Sun Hats and Wellie Boots has a page dedicated to exploring Lent with young children, with an emphasis on nature and the outdoors.

Image description

Muddy Church offers guidance for producing a barefoot Easter trail and an Easter Garden. The Easter Garden includes a 'wandering' activity where some of the items for the garden can be collected, and the possibility of creating and adding to the garden over a number of days leading up to Easter.

Image description

BRF has an Easter Story Multipack for Families, which includes readings, questions, activities and prayers for families to share. Its Easter Inside Out book explores the Easter story through a varied cast of characters.

As we think about events in Iran, we remember the Iranian Church. Safar is a mobile app that emerged from the need to help new believers become disciples in the fast-growing church in Iran. 'Safar' means 'journey' in Persian, and the app encourages two people to take a discipleship journey together using 30 steps over 100 days. Find out more.
