In The Fold:

March In Multitudes

[ projects, ideas, people, music, reflection & radio ]

...and a special guest reflection for Creative Communications this month!

Image description

Yo, what did I even do last month? Those 28 days raced by like a... you know the animal - the year of the - one you can bet on, for yourself.

Not much to say here!

A frenetic February:

  • Played an energizing, super fun (re)set with my dear pal, DJ RonJon for his annual birthday jam @ the 1+ only, The Little Jerry - we spun disco, funk, soul, dancehall, zouk & house to a packed room.

  • Rolled into High Notes Coffee & Vinyl to play trip-hop & jazz the next day.

  • Produced three radio shows & launched Sound Travels' syndication with Another Setting Radio - a residency that will see our archival episodes broadcast once a month! Listen to the first feat. my friends, Aldo & Ashley - DJs, co-chefs & creators of Antylia - here

  • Celebrating 20 years in music and his latest album, Start Anew, Shad rocked his first Toronto hometown show in three years on February 21 at The Mod Club - check out coverage from SypherSights, Jojo Ojofeitimi, Ziyaad Haniff and Live In Limbo.

Guest Reflection~

Here and Now
by Jo-Anne Wilson

What does it mean to be from Toronto?

That is how I opened this section last month, and I was overwhelmed by the response. First, thank you for taking the time to read this far into the newsletter. It means more than you could ever imagine. And, thank you for sharing your ideas and feedback - that's what this space is here for!

I'm welcoming our first guest piece by my good friend, writer, community organizer + Club Sandwich Director, Jo-Anne Wilson - whom I met while starting my journey as a volunteer with Food For The Record in 2021.

This is Jo-Anne's response to the question above. Such prose!
Thank you, Jo-Anne, for sharing with us!

Most people crave to belong and connect to a need or a sense of belonging, especially in Toronto. Our neighbourhoods have specific flavours. We have affinities with them. People here belong to them and derive a sense of self from them.

Do I? I am not sure. What I DO know - have always known - is that I am meant to be here. That sounds strange for a born and raised Torontonian. But I was called here somehow to hold space for Toronto itself, its growth, its stories, its waters, its flow. That means I navigate it differently.

Being from here means I am acutely aware of what Toronto is: a city with no age because it is not allowed to get old, a place where its streets overflow because its streams and rivers, now hidden, cannot. A place where so many stories from all over converge and collide.

Toronto feels like a favourite book. I hold its stories and energy to help others get lost in it and appreciate it as I do. There is an intimacy to this, and this intimacy is my sense of place - at least for now - Jo-Anne Wilson

I was born and raised in Toronto. I run a small local charity named Club Sandwich that helps fight food insecurity by providing sandwiches to organizations that have meal programs for the food insecure/unhoused. I also work the front of house in a sourdough bakery, which allows me to help foster community. Both roles allow me to grow and support third places creating stronger connections within the community. I have a lifelong love of music and am beginning to explore the significance of culture and community through the lenses of memory, music and food.
