Moving to the Next Phase: The TORG+Murhesa Free Surgical Campaign Is Intensifying

Image description

At the Murhesa Neurosurgical Center Neurosurgical Center, Bukavu, DR. Congo, we are reaching a crucial milestone. After successfully operating on more than 120 patients (cysts, keloids, fibroids, breast nodules), we are officially launching the next phase of our free surgical campaign.

Currently, 74 goiter surgeries are scheduled and will begin in the coming days. This marks a major turning point in our mission, yet the challenge remains immense in the face of growing demand.

Despite our efforts, the needs for the upcoming phases remain critical:
* 147 hernias and over 18 cases of hemorrhoids/prolapse
* 24 breast nodules and 20 additional fibroids
* Spina bifida cases and urgent orthopedic needs (specialists required)

This progress would not have been possible without the courage of our local surgeons and volunteer partners, as well as the expertise of surgeons who travelled from the United Kingdom, Egypt, and India.

Call for Support for This New Phase
To turn these waiting lists into saved lives during this decisive stage, we urgently need:

* Surgical equipment and anesthesia supplies
* Essential medications and hospital consumables
* Fuel for generators (vital to counter frequent power outages)

Together, let’s leave no one behind.

HER-STORY

Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science!

Image description

HER-STORY was recently created at St. Joseph’s Hospital when an all-female cardiac surgery team came together in the operating room to perform an open-heart procedure.

Women are underrepresented in the cardiac surgery profession, and we want to celebrate this unique milestone and this incredible team!
We are proud of the specialized care they provide to our patients and the inspiration they bring to the next generation of girls who want to break barriers.

Matilda Crawford - Anesthesiologist (1894)

Image description

Matilda Crawford (b.1894) is remembered in some vintage history posts as an early pioneering anesthesiologist who helped advance the safe use and understanding of anesthetics at a time when few women entered medical specialties. Working around the turn of the 20th century, she challenged gender barriers in medicine and contributed to improved patient care and anesthesia practices, inspiring future generations of clinicians in a then male-dominated field.
