| In a week when we learned that Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge is celebrating the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Laysan and black-footed albatross babies, when a herd of llamas in England cornered a would-be thief in a field until officers arrived, when we learned apes can imagine playing along at a pretend tea party, and when the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy began, we're still talking board games here on Meeple Mountain. |
|
We publish new articles, reviews, and lists almost a dozen times a week. Here's some of the things we've been talking about in the past week. |

| I have been writing for Meeple Mountain for seven years and have been obsessed with tabletop gaming for even longer. Back in high school, I took a trip to Georgia to visit a buddy in college, where I was introduced to Carcassonne for the first time. It wasn't long after that I discovered Dominion and all its various expansions, but diving head-first into Arkham Horror was what really started my obsession. Now, though, my tastes are a bit different. Here are my Top 3 Games:
Top Games Root: You could probably toss up just about any Cole Wehrle design up here and it would deserve its spot. I will always play this asymmetrical war game where woodland critters vie for control of the forest. For me, the beauty of Root is the joy of discovery. No two games play out the same way, and you can spend a lifetime mastering all the various factions and seeing how they fit together.
Terra Mystica: There's no luck, no hidden information, and no sudden betrayals. Terra Mystica is about as purely strategic as a game can get, and it rewards carefully planning ahead to optimize your civilization's rise to power and control. I've played this more times than I can count, and I'll still jump for joy any time my group asks to play it.
Spirit Island: I am notoriously not a fan of cooperative games, so I was dubious about Spirit Island. I was so wrong. My brain is set on fire every time I play it as I try to manage my little island's ever-expanding series of emergencies. It's fun solo or in a group, and there's enough expansion content to keep you busy for a long time. Who knew the secret to solving cooperative game quarterbacking was to simply make the game too dang complex to quarterback? |
