Welcome to our latest newsletter.
It’s been a busy summer! Please scroll down to see what we’ve been up to.

A huge thank you from Coco!

Coco would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated towards her ear surgery (Read more in our previous newsletter!). She’s happy to report that she’s made a complete recovery, with no more pain and discomfort, and has returned to her normal routine of daily snoozes on the terrace and strolls around the garden area. Being a senior lady, Coco is also on a renal diet to help maintain good kidney function and a healthy weight, and so far things are going really well!

We are grateful we had the chance to give Coco a better quality of life in her autumn years. We thank you for helping us achieve that.

Autumn fundraiser for our oldies!

Barney is our oldest resident!

We can’t believe our handsome Barney is almost 18!

We’re pleased that so many of our resident cats are now reaching middle age and beyond (meet ten of our seniors here). We know that they are living longer, healthier lives thanks to sterilisation, good food & shelter, and prompt veterinary care when needed. It’s a far cry from what their lives as strays would have been like. As street cats, their life expectancy is much lower. But having an ageing group of cats brings its challenges too. One of the main health issues facing elderly cats is chronic kidney disease which we manage at Syros Cats by adapting the cats’ diet and by adding supplements.

This all comes at a cost of course, which is rising as our roll call of oldies gets longer! We did the maths:

Renal biscuits: €33.50 per month

ProNefra renal supplement: €47.50 (currently lasting 3-4 months)

WeHemo food supplement: €26.00 (currently lasting 2 months)

As you can see, this adds a significant amount to our monthly food bill! We are therefore launching a fundraiser to help us keep our seniors in tip-top form over the autumn and winter months, when they are more vulnerable to illness.

Our target to cover these costs is €500. If you would like to donate, please click the button below and make a donation securely via our website.  On behalf of our elderly felines, thank you!

Ladies and Gentlemen...MIllie and April - The Skoupinis!

We recently had news about Millie and April, the delightful carbon-copy kittens of our much-missed and much-loved Skoupy (see our previous newsletter), and affectionately known as the Skoupinis! They were adopted by one of our volunteers who had first met them when they were just 4 weeks old and couldn’t bear to leave them behind. Now 18-months old, the girls have settled into their new life in London and, by all accounts, have become something of a TikTok sensation. Click below to find out more!

    TNR round-up

    You’re gonna do what?

    Image description

An ear clip to be proud of

We’ve been working really hard on our TNR projects recently and are delighted to share with you the stats for the year so far (mid-October):

Number of cats sterilised: 312, of which 170 were female and 142 male

Areas covered are too numerous to mention but hotspots included: Kini (48), Galissas (40), Ano Syros (28) and Azolimnos (23)

Funded by: Demos (25), Veterinary Clinic of the Cyclades (25), private individuals (43), and, most impressively, Syros Cats general donations (219)

And the year isn’t over yet! We intend keeping up the pace during the winter months, concentrating on different areas and returning to others where we know there are issues. We have some tremendous support from our Cat Guardians and our own volunteers who have shown amazing dedication and stamina!

Thank you to everyone who has helped us this year, not least to our generous supporters for their donations. If you’d like to help our winter TNR campaign, please donate below!

    Electra

When we carry out TNR, we often come across individual cats whose plight really stands out. Electra was just such a cat. Click below to read her story.

In our small village of Kini, we have no fewer than eight feeding stations for the strays of the area. Our volunteers visit each one every day to provide food and fresh water for the cats who feed there, and also monitor their general health and keep a look out for any newcomers for on-going TNR. Our Fisherman’s Colony is probably one of our most established colonies and here, our founder Jacky Storey looks back at how it all started.
