As an LTV member you are represented by AFMLTA: the national voice for teachers of Languages. AFMLTA provides vision, leadership, advocacy, resources and support and for quality teaching and learning of languages.
AFMLTA continues to actively advocate for Languages education at the federal level.
Recently AFMLTA emailed Dr Anne Aly MP, Minister for Multicultural Affairs welcoming the recent announcement of the Australian Government’s investment of $25 million to support 600 community schools across Australia that provide the opportunity for more than 90,000 students to learn 84 languages. We recognised that this is an important initiative, being led by the Department of Home Affairs, that recognises the vital role that community schools play in preserving linguistic diversity and fostering social inclusion. We asked for further information about the $5 million to be dedicated to a specialist Asian languages stream, aimed at helping more students, regardless of their background, achieve fluency in Asian languages through to Years 11 and 12.
Currently AFMLTA is preparing a submission for the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Education inquiry into how Australia can strengthen Asia capability, literacy, and engagement both within and beyond the formal education system. AFMLTA's submission will highlight the critical importance of teaching all languages and will draw directly on the recommendations outlined in theNational Languages Plan and Strategy document which the AFMLTA was commissioned to develop for government consideration.
The Inquiry into building Asia capability in Australia through the education system and beyond will consider how Australia can build Asia capability, literacy and engagement within and beyond the formal education system. It will seek to identify the enablers and barriers to building Asia capability in schools and universities, strategies to increase demand and access to Asian languages, as well as the role of new technologies and diaspora communities.
