OCTOBER 2025

From the Community Connector

Kia ora, Talofa, Mālō e lelei, Bula, Hola, Bonjour, Ni hao, Namaste — and so many more!

Our community is made richer by the many cultures that call it home, each bringing their own dance, music, songs, stories, traditions, language, and food. Together, these create the beautiful and diverse fabric of our community.

When we learn from other cultures, we strengthen our sense of belonging, understanding, and community spirit — creating a place where everyone feels valued and at home.

At Taieri Network we welcome everyone! This is a community newsletter and we welcome contributions from all community groups, organisations and businesses. If you have information to share with the wider community, reach out to us.

This month I have sent the newsletter out a little early due to all the awesome events on (scroll to the end), just so you don't miss the cool stuff happening over the long weekend.

For me (Teresa), October has been a month of enjoymentgood month ... sunny weather (on and off), spring flowers, and hanging out with people and organisations across Taieri. With meetings and connections, hosting workshops and popping along to AGM's, it's been enjoyable to show support and see what's going on.

In the school holidays, Taieri Network hosted a children's workshop learning about DNA - the stuff that makes us all different and why. Lots of fun was had making DNA strands by the kids (photos above). Thank you to Alice from The Sustainable School for sharing your skills and knowledge.

Adults had fun at our Christmas Craft workshops with Fiona showing us how to upcycle decorations, make low cost table dislays and Christmas crackers, creatively wrap gifts and make Christmas cards.

Upcycling  Christmas decorations - low cost & using what we already had on hand

Christmas Carols playing, yummy snacks and lots of chatter while making Christmas cards

I popped along to the Blind Low Vision support group's emergency planning meeting, and Otago Vintage Machinery Club & Taieri Historic Museum open day.

After being at the Mosgiel Foodbank AGM, I heard the sound of trumpets, so in search I went ... popping into the Mosgiel Brass Band practice (that was very awesome!).

Later in the month I spoke at the Mosgiel Presbyterian Church Fellowship group and was interviewed by an Otago Polytechinc student looking into event and hospitatlity organisations in Dunedin. I helped out at the Louise Davie Charitable Trust Fashion event at The Grange Lifecare Village (another very awesome event!), hosted the monthly Taieri Resource Group meeting with guest speaker from SeniorNet, and watched Caking It Up on the Taieri members make chocolate swans.

Next week I am off to Shakti Women's Refuge 30th Anniversay celebration and looking forward to the long weekend.

Business: A-Z Cuts – Mosgiel’s Friendly Local Barbershop

A‑Z Cuts began as a small Dunedin barbershop on George Street, offering quality men's and kids' haircuts with a welcoming no‑appointment ethos. Responding to local demand, the owners expanded to Mosgiel in November 2023, opening a branch at 180 Gordon Road, with services now for both men and women. Another branch recently opened in North Road, Dunedin early October 2025.

The team at A‑Z Cuts is known for their friendly approach and consistent results. The barbers take the time to understand each client’s preferences, ensuring everyone leaves looking and feeling their best. A standout member is Abi, who has built a loyal following thanks to his skill, attention to detail, and approachable service. Many locals now travel to the Mosgiel branch specifically to get a haircut from him.

A‑Z Cuts offers a full range of hair services. Men and kids can enjoy classic trims, modern fades, buzz cuts, or textured styles, while women can access practical everyday cuts, trims, and restyles. The barbers also provide professional beard shaping and head shaves. Walk-ins are always welcome, and seniors receive a 15% discount, making the shop accessible and community-focused.

The Mosgiel branch opens daily from 9am, closing around 7pm weekdays and 6pm on Sundays. This flexibility allows locals to drop in at convenient times without needing an appointment.

Otago Aero Club - Important Safety Notice

No Public Access

Otago Aero Club kindly remind all walkers, cyclists, and runners that the accessways off Stedman Road and Dukes Road North are strictly not for public use

These are operational airport areas, with active aircraft moving on the ground and in the air.

Despite clear signage at both entrances, we continue to see members of the public entering these restricted zones. This poses serious safety risks to both individuals and pilots. Please respect the warning signs and fencing in place—unauthorised access is considered trespassing and may result in removal or prosecution.

Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe. Thank you!

DCC Ungulate Control Operations 2025
6 October - 5 December 2025

Yup! I had to look up the meaning of Ungulate! It roughly means "being hoofed" or "hoofed animal". That would be a great Scrabble word.

Dunedin City Council (DCC) has contracted High Country Contracting to complete ungulate control to protect native forest in several areas around Dunedin. This pest control effort is crucial for preserving the health of our ecosystems, which are home to diverse native flora and fauna. Ungulate damage also has an enormous impact on recreational reserve use.

Ground hunters will use indicating dogs, firearms, thermal imaging technology and drones (where consented to do so) between 6 October and 5 December 2025, weekdays only, during first light or during the hours of darkness. The target species are:

  • Feral Goats
  • Wild Cattle
  • Pigs
  • Possums

This operation will be done in accordance with the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

The reserve areas indicated in the image [below] remain open to the public, but caution is advised. Signage will be mounted at all main entrances prior to commencement of operations. Road cones and ‘Shooting in Progress’ signs will be in place at all main entrances when an operation is taking place.

When Teens Turn to Self-Harm:

Signs, Support, and Hope

Self-harm can be extremely frightening for parents and teens alike. So how can we help people who engage in self-injury?

Public understanding of self-injury, often called “cutting,” in adolescents has grown in recent years. Many studies and media reports have drawn attention to this teen mental health concern, helping reduce confusion and ignorance.

Despite this progress, misconceptions about self-injury remain.

One common belief is that self-harm affects only a small number of teens. In reality, recent studies show that about 17% of adolescents and roughly 15% of college students in the United States have engaged in some form of self-injury at least once. Rates are similar in other countries.

Caking It Up on the Taieri

PLove cake decorating or keen to give it a go? Caking It Up on the Taieri is a welcoming group for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced cake designers, who enjoy decorating, modelling, and sharing ideas.

We meet monthly at Mosgiel Presbyterian Church, 17 Church St, Mosgiel (back room - park in the church car park at the rear and enter through the back gate to enter via the side door).

Each session includes relaxed chats, tips, and occasional hands-on classes.

Taieri Network popped in for a look in October to find everyone making a chocolate swan. It is not as easy as it sounds! Ross gave instructions about how to make chocolate modelling clay, tempering the chocolate, and tips to create swan wings.

The concentration was broken for a cuppa and supper with lots of laughter, only to be followed by chocolate swan finishing touches.

Pop along to see if this is an activity you would enjoy. Ask about casual rates per session or consider becoming a member. Contact Mieka: [email protected] or 021446831
