My INsnyde Take: ICE Barbie and the Deportation Dreamhouse

Mike Braun is now just three deportations, two fat lips and a chin tuck away from completing his transformation into ICE Barbie — complete with an authoritarian dreamhouse, a militarized helipad, and a National Guard-sized detention center. In his latest cosplay as Kristi Noem’s frostbitten stunt double, Braun rolled out a plan that deputizes Indiana cops, prison guards, and DHS staff as ICE-lite agents under the 287(g) program. Because when Hoosiers are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries, or afford their electricity bills, what they really need is for their state government to prioritize rounding up immigrants over feeding families or funding schools.

While Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith is off channeling 1950s televangelist energy and turning his office into a taxpayer-funded tabernacle, Braun is staging a “Law & Order: Xenophobia Unit” reboot at Camp Atterbury. Hoosiers might have been hoping their new governor would focus on, say, skyrocketing healthcare costs or the basic economic crises hitting Indiana households. Instead, Braun’s busy fantasizing about ICE bootcamps and cosplay photo ops with badges and boots. It’s less governance, more MAGA fan fiction with a detention center twist.

Reading might make you cry; Not reading definitely will

On Monday night, I sat in my recliner writing my third novel. I’m about halfway done with it, and my editor is expecting that first half by the end of the week so she can do a midpoint “assessment” of the story. She worked on my last book, and I know how she operates. The first question she will contemplate is whether or not the story is grabbing the audience quickly.
