This month I'm delighted to welcome Mike Donald as guest writer, who has kindly reviewed the current Ken Currie exhibition at An Lanntair for Hulabhaig (see exhibitions below).
Mike is a writer, originally from Stornoway who many will know from his story telling for the Isle of Harris Distillery. My own travels this month have taken me on a road trip to the mainland, visiting Kilmorack Gallery and Kirkcudbright Gallery in search of Island Contemporary Art. |

| Ken Currie An Lanntair, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis. 12 July – 23 August 2025. |
|
The current showing of Ken Currie’s An Turas / The Crossing at An Lanntair in Stornoway offers a rare opportunity to experience his work within an island context, both geographically and psychologically. | Church envy and nearly a Steve Dilworth for the collection. |

Googling places to visit for my roadtrip I came across Tony Davidson and his Kilmorack Gallery, near Beauly, Inverness-shire. Needless to say, I was envious of his church/gallery project, making me think more about Baile na Cille and what it could have been. |

| The Hulabhaig Collection is a small but growing collection of Island Contemporary Art. My aim as curator, it is to reach out to artists whose work is very much ‘of these islands’. I hope to meet artists, discuss ideas and their influences, explore contemporary and historic issues as delivered though island visual art and follow up with further research to document and share my findings.
And on the way maybe acquire some great artworks for the collection.
