With the sun still shining bright, September felt like an extension of summer! But it won't be too long before the weather cools down, the leaves will turn to auburn, and our city will welcome fall once more. Our students began the term by using nature, with all its vibrancy and ever-changing colours, to gain insight into colour theory. For those who missed the first few weeks of fall classes, it's never too late to join us mid-term at a pro-rated fee! If you or your family member wishes to join us this month, feel free to email or call the studio and we'll be happy to fit you into a class that still has space available. As we begin the planning stages of our winter term, we invite you to check our class schedule throughout the month and register early to save a spot in the class that best fits your winter plans. This month, we're excited to have Sonia Halpern return to the studio with insight and in-depth knowledge of art in the Renaissance era. This 6-part weekly lecture series will explore a period that produced some of the most iconic art images ever created! Works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael (to name but a few artists) epitomizes the period's priorities of spiritual and aesthetic magnificence. This splendor makes the era so poignant as it revolutionized the art of storytelling and visual communication. We hope you can join us on Mondays (October 20 to November 24) as we dive into Sonia's Art History lecture series "We're Having a Renaissance!" Space is limited and advance registration is required.

Featured Art Technique: Wet and Dry Fresco

A fresco is a mural painting process in which a painting becomes an integral part of the wall. The technique most frequently associated to fresco painting is “buon” or “true fresco,” where the colours, which are made by grinding dry-powder pigments in pure water, dry and set with the plaster to become a permanent part of the wall. The "true fresco" process is done in three successive coats of specially prepared plaster, sand, and marble dust in order to ensure that the colours are embedded into the surface, and as the wall dries and sets, the pigment particles become bound or cemented along with the lime and sand particles. The earliest known fresco to archaeologists come 2000 BCE during the Bronze Age of Crete, and while very few Ancient Greek and Roman frescos survive today, the ones that do serve a valuable source of historic documentation about the everyday lives of the ancients. Over the years artists developed two other variants of fresco, “secco fresco” which is painted onto dry plaster requiring a binding medium such as glue, oil or egg tempera for the painting to penetrate, and “mezzo fresco” which is painted onto almost but not completely dry plaster, allowing the dampness of the plaster to act as a binding medium. While the colours do not penetrate into the plaster in these two more contemporary fresco versions they are useful for detailed painting and for retouching true fresco. This fall, our high school students were provided with a unique opportunity as they created their very own mini fresco! After mixing and pouring plaster onto a flat surface, students used Emily Carr's body of work as a source of inspiration to create a fall landscape painting in the form of dry fresco. We're excited to see this process through and share their work-in-progress below!

As our students come to class each week ready to learn and grow as artists, we are fortunate to witness their gradual growth with every work of art they accomplish. For those unable to drop by and enjoy watching this magic as it evolves in real time, we are happy to share with you a sample of their work-in-progress! We look forward to showcasing their completed art at our upcoming Group Art Show next month!
