Community Newsletter

Dear Friends of Salus,

I hope everyone is having a good end to their summers as we head into the fall. We're seeking three new peer support group leaders, so check out the details below and apply by September 7th if you're interested!

As always, we have support groups, interest groups, and our weekly Resource Hours, and we'd love to see you there. Our end of summer Trans Support Group Picnic is coming up on September 21st-- this is open to anyone who attends or might want to attend our trans support groups and their loved ones.

We're also hosting a movie series with the downtown library, starting with a classic: But I'm a Cheerleader on September 24th. Plus, there's so much to check out in our community bulletin, including free cancer screenings, Equality Michigan's community updates, and lots of studies if you'd like to be involved in research.

If you have a bit extra to give this month, in addition to monetary donations, we could use reusable period underwear (boxer styles), soap, shampoo, conditioner, and baby wipes for our Care Package Station.

Warmly,

Frank Heveran (he/him)

Program Director

The Salus Center is seeking group leaders to facilitate the following groups:

Transfem Support Group, Ages 40+
Last Tuesday of the month, 7-8:30pm

This meeting of the Transfem Support Group is specifically for trans women and transfem people (and those questioning if they are) who are over 40. While the other three Transfem Support Groups welcome all adults (over 18), we recognize that coming out, transitioning, and relationships with partners, family, and friends can look a bit different after 40, and we hope that this space can provide support and community.

Partners of Trans Folks:

Exact name and time/date to be determined

This support group is for the cisgender partners of transgender and nonbinary people. The expectations and dynamics of romantic partnerships differ from other familial relationships, especially when navigating a partner’s coming out and/or transitioning, so this group offers a place for cisgender partners to seek support for their experience.

Queer Parents and Families:

Exact name and time/date to be determined

This group is to support 2SLGBTQIA+ parents and families in navigating a world that often rejects non-traditional family structures. Although folks are welcome to attend both groups, this is distinct from Here for You, as the expectation is that group attendees are 2SLGBTQIA+. With Here for You, cisgender and straight allies with 2SLGBTQIA+ children or important people in their lives are encouraged to attend.

Peer support groups are informal discussion-based meetings where folks can connect and help each other based on shared experiences. Group leaders should be people who have lived experience with the identity/focus of the group, facilitation or leadership experience, and a desire to run a group at the Salus Center.

Support group leaders are paid a $100 monthly stipend and will require background checks. Email [email protected] for questions and concerns.

Our research team at the University of Maryland, led by Prof. Hal Daumé III, is recruiting paid participants for a research study exploring how people ask questions about trans topics. We are also examining how experts respond to these questions and how AI systems succeed—or fall short—in addressing these information needs. We are seeking participants who:

  • Are at least 18 years old

  • Have experience observing or answering questions about transness or trans issues in a formal capacity (e.g., support group facilitators, LGBT center staff, community advocates, etc.)

The REACH Lab at Virginia Tech is currently recruiting participants nationwide for a paid, fully virtual research study to better understand the unique daily experiences of multigender-attracted (e.g., bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual, demisexual, etc.) adults and their romantic partners. Specifically, we are examining how stress linked to individuals' intersecting identities (e.g., discrimination, harassment, biphobia, stereotypes about multigender-attracted individuals) impact adults' relationships, how partners support each other during these moments of stress, and other health outcomes. We hope that this study will enhance the inclusivity of couple therapy and will inform the
public of the harms caused by harmful rhetoric and policies.

Each participant can earn up to $120 for completing the study. Participants must participate in the study with their partner.

Our study is approved by the Institutional Review Board at Virginia Tech (IRB # 23-399), our research team includes LGBTQ+-identifying members, and all members of our research team are SafeZone trained. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Meagan Brem, and co-Investigators include Dr. Brian Feinstein, and Dr. Ryan Shorey.

Our study is titled “Constructing a Developmentally and Socially Contextualized Model of Minority Stress for Gender Minority Youth.” Youth would be eligible to participate if they are between the ages of 13-19, identify as a gender minority individual (e.g., transgender, non-binary, or other non-cis identities) and speak English. The purpose of this study is to produce a theoretical framework that works to illustrate how gender minority youth experience, manage and are affected by identity-specific or minority stressors. This study will also examine how developmental, social and other factors could influence the processes involved in this framework. The hope is that this work assists in developing and refining affirmative mental health interventions and supports for gender minority youth and their caregivers.

This study is approved by the Indiana University IRB (#24438) and has a waiver of parental consent to protect youth who are not out to parents/guardians. Additionally, we will be taking additional measures to protect potentially identifiable information from participants and ensure that such information is only reported in aggregate and scrubbed from any publications or analysis. Youth that participate in an interview as part of the study will be compensated $25 in the form of an Amazon gift card for their time.
