        DOCTORAL SYMPOSIUM

        14 September 2025 - This Doctoral Symposium in Engineering Education Research (EER) offers PhD candidates the chance to explore and develop their research interests in an interdisciplinary workshop, guided by senior scholars in the field. Participants will share their dissertation work and exchange feedback. The event is a pre-conference activity for the SEFI 2025 Annual Conference at Tampere University, Finland.

        SEFI JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION ADVANCEMENT

        Franz Newland from University of Ottawa and Hossam Sadek
        from York University submitted a new paper to the SEFI Journal for Engineering Education Advancement. The authores focused on a new conceptual framework of lifelong learning which breaks it into three layers: a long-term career- and life-focussed learning layer, a medium-term “programme of learning” layer, and a real-time layer for monitoring and adjusting learning as it happens.

          Rawad Asfour, Rola Saad and Salam Khamas from The University of Sheffield, submitted a paper to the SEFI Journal for Engineering Education Advancement introducing a blended educational methodology that harmoniously combines the Flipped Classroom and Simulation-Aided Learning models, tailored for a technology-centric teaching of antennas.

            SEFI PODCAST

            The second episode in Season 6 hears from Siara Isaac and Joelyn de Lima, part of the 3T Play project (funded by the Lego Foundation) team from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), who focused on the use of tangible objects and playfulness to support the learning process and support skills development.

                PhD Students & Postdoctoral Researchers within 3 years of graduation are warmly invited to join The SEFI Early Career Researchers’ Club, a series of 9 yearly online meetings focused on topics targeting this career stage. Led by Dr. Diana Martin (UCL), this initiative will start in the academic year 2025/26 with a limited cohort of 18 early career researchers.                 Call for Reviewers: Support the Danish Advanced Research Academy

                The Danish Advanced Research Academy (DARA) is a new national initiative dedicated to advancing PhD education and training in the natural, technical, and medical sciences across Denmark. In addition to offering educational and networking activities, DARA will soon award PhD fellowships through a competitive, peer-reviewed process.

                

                To ensure a rigorous and impartial selection, DARA is currently seeking experienced researchers to join its international reviewer pool. Register your interest before 15 August to be considered for the first evaluation round.                       INVESTMENT IN INNOVATION

                      The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is investing €63 million through its 2024 Higher Education Initiative, supporting 47 projects across 46 countries. The initiative connects 620 organisations to strengthen innovation capacity in higher education. 12 projects will focus on deep tech, contributing to the EIT’s goal of training 1 million deep tech talents by 2025.

                                EU POLICY

                                At the recent Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council meeting, EU ministers adopted two key documents advancing the vision of a joint European degree:

                                • A Council Resolution on a joint European degree label, outlining a roadmap toward a possible joint degree by 2029.

                                • A Council Recommendation on a European quality assurance and recognition system, ensuring consistent academic standards across borders.

                                These agreements, negotiated under the Polish EU Council Presidency, follow the November 2024 adoption of a recommendation on attractive and sustainable academic careers.
