Spring Newsletter 2025

Volunteer with ANBC!

Are you passionate about pollinators and looking to get hands-on experience with real conservation work? The Alberta Native Bee Council (ANBC) is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with our 5-year province-wide bee monitoring program!

This is a unique opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of native bees while learning valuable entomology skills. Volunteers will help process bee specimens from our monitoring traps to prepare them for species identification. This includes tasks like washing insects, sorting insects, and pinning.

Whether you're a student, naturalist, or just curious about native bees, we’d love to have you on board.

When:

Mondays and Wednesdays beginning May 21th with virtual training

Time: 11am-4pm (may be flexible based on volunteer’s availability)

Minimum Commitment: 4 hours/week for 6 weeks (with the possibility to extend)

Where:

North Glenora Community League (Edmonton)

13535 109A Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 3Z4

We will start with virtual training on the basics of bee processing, followed by in-person training on your first day in the lab.

Perks of the job:

After 24 volunteer hours, you’ll receive a Worker Bee Volunteer Certificate and an ANBC gift package as our way of saying thank you for your time and dedication!

Why do we monitor bees this way?

Monitoring bees using standardized traps helps us understand which species are present across Alberta and how populations are changing over time, in a way that is comparable to other monitoring efforts. Bee trapping and processing is essential to accurately identify bees to species level, which is critical for conservation and research.

Have questions?

Feel free to reach out to Ilan Domnich at 780-935-1007 or by email to [email protected].

Bee Taxonomy - More exciting than you think!

Check out our new blog post written by Natalia Ganson as she explores the fascinating world of naming and classifying bees, and why it matters more than you might expect. With around 375 bee species in Alberta, taxonomy is the key to understanding our native pollinators, how they're doing, and how best to protect them.

Natalia breaks down the role of taxonomists, the importance of scientific names, and how knowing your local bees by name can help foster a deeper connection to nature and guide effective conservation efforts.

Read more and get inspired to know your local bees by name!

Time to Put Out Your Bumble Bee Nest Boxes

The time is here, bumble bee queens are emerging and looking for a suitable place to nest, so it’s time to put out your bumble bee nest boxes! Ideally, boxes should be placed in half sun, so the sun can warm the colony but won't get too hot during mid-summer heat-waves.

Looking for cotton refills? Raw cotton can be purchased for pick up in Calgary and Edmonton on our merch store's website. Buy cotton refills here!

Head to our Bumble Bee Box Monitoring Program page for information on how to clean your bee box and when to have it out.

Don’t forget to fill out the Bumble Bee Box Reporting Form which helps us to gather valuable information about Alberta’s Bumble Bees! Even if you don't get bees this year, every report provides us with an important data point, including the absence of bees that year!

Don’t have a Bumble Bee Nest Box yet? You can build one with our Bumble Bee Nest Box Assembly Instructions

What is the Alberta Conservation Information Management System (ACIMS)?

The Alberta Conservation Information Management System (ACIMS) is the biodiversity data center for Alberta and a member of the international NatureServe network of Conservation Data Centers. Run by Alberta Parks, ACIMS offers detailed information on species, ecological communities, and landforms across the province.

ACIMS includes trends for species (focus on plants, fungi, inverts), and other biodiversity elements such as ecological communities, and landforms. Rare species are added to tracking lists, spatial data is collected for these tracked species, and species conservation statuses are updated when data and time allows.

  • Data can be downloaded freely for exploration and specific data can even be requested
  • For those interested in conservation, ACIMS can help in
    • Providing a species list for various taxa in AB
    • Habitat identification, locating ecological communities, and finding locations for tracked species
    • Being a central hub to contribute data to support broader conservation
