Swift News

Image description

You may well have heard and seen the first swifts of the year screeching around the town centre and Fishlake Meadows in the past couple of weeks. This year they seem to have arrived even earlier, having made the perilous journey from south of the Sahara in Africa to spend a fleeting few weeks her with us to either breed or just spend the summer months.

The first ones to arrive are those that know where they are planning to nest - they are very loyal to their breeding sites and return to the same nest year after year - this is one reason why it’s so important to ensure their known sites are protected, especially important when wooden facias are replaced by plastic soffits without access for the birds.

Close behind the fully adult birds are the three year-olds who scouted for a nest site the previous year and are ready for their first breeding season. And then there are the youngsters who are too young to do anything but make the amazing journey to join us for the summer.

The fall in numbers of adult swifts reaching us continues, though it’s good to know that there has been some success in Romsey with new nesting swifts this year, in boxes sourced from Hampshire Swifts five years ago! If you already have uninhabited swift boxes, please don’t give up on them. It does take time for the swifts to find them, even with a swift call to alert them!
Any sightings of swifts would be welcomed by Hampshire Swifts - you can find the survey form here: www.hampshireswifts.co.uk/survey

Peregrine Update

It was reported in early May that there are three peregrine chicks in the nest, all are feeding although one was slower to respond to the offer of food. The male delivered breakfast while Alistair Brown, Bell Tower Captain, was watching so the family unit seems to be working well.

The 'peregrine people' hope to come and ring the chicks in early June.
