July 2025

We’re halfway through the year, and there’s plenty happening across our science education community. With National Science Week just around the corner, now’s a great time to connect, share ideas, and get inspired - we'd love to know what you have planned in your classroom!

One opportunity not to miss: the call for workshops for the Early Career Teachers Conference closes on 13 July. If you’ve got an idea or experience that could support fellow early career educators, we’d love to hear from you.

In this edition, you’ll find upcoming PL, resources, and community news to support your teaching through Term 3 and beyond. Thanks for being part of the SASTA community—we’re glad you’re here.

National Science Week

What do you have planned for National Science Week this year? Let us know what you have planned to feature on our National Science Week round-up blog! Check out some of the great activities we've come across here. We will continue to update this in the lead up to National Science Week.

Science Alive! Volunteers

We're looking for volunteers to help in the Oliphant Science Awards space from Friday 1 August - Sunday 3 August! If you're interested in being involved, please complete the volunteer form here

Creating Curiosity Collections - 20 August

This webinar explores the value of diverse collections in enriching science education. Participants will learn about building various collection types, including specimens, books, bones, and more, and their role in sparking curiosity and inquiry.

It's not a Fringe Show, but... Tips for creating engaging primary science lessons without losing your mind! - 28 August

Students often arrive at specialist Science lessons expecting fun and excitement - a bubble show, buckets of slime, sherbet to scoff, volcanoes going kaboom, rockets to fire, and geysers of elephant’s toothpaste. It’s wonderful to see their excitement and interest in doing hands-on science! However, we are typically running this show with no labs, little equipment, and no support to set up and clean up - plus we have a whole curriculum to teach, not just an entertainment schedule to deliver.
