Community Newsletter

Dear Friends of Salus,

Over the last several weeks of our 2025 sustaining donor campaign, 26 more people have joined us as recurring donors in sustaining queer joy across Greater Lansing.

We are 48% of the way to our 2025 goal!

Six more people joining us by donating $10 a month will get us to 50% of our 2025 goal. Can you help us meet this challenge today?

In the center, we now have extended sizes of reusable period underwear in our Care Package Station, sizes XS through 5X. Stop by during Resource Hours to see everything we have on offer!

We also accept donations, both monetary and in kind, for our Care Package Station. Right now, we could especially use chest compression binders, either new or gently used. New hygiene products, especially deodorant, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, and face lotion are always needed too.

Queer joy is us. Queer joy is YOU. Together, we’re realizing a greater Lansing community where 2SLGBTQIA+ people thrive as our whole, authentic selves.

Thank you,

Frank Heveran (he/him)

Program Director

I'm reaching out specifically to do outreach for our second Workers' Pride Conference, a one-day event on July 19, held on the U-M Dearborn campus. The conference workshops will be led by LGBTQ+ instructors and cover topics like LGBTQ+ Medical Rights, Community Organizing, Mental Health, and History of the LGBTQ+ Movement, among others.
We're recruiting workers, community activists, and anyone who might be interested in organizing for power, building community, and navigating workplace issues. Our goal is to recruit a cohort of attendees who can share their diverse experiences and perspectives with each other.
There is a $100 registration fee, which can be covered by many employers' tuition assistance programs. We also have scholarships available; if cost is a barrier, we are more than happy to accommodate.

Our research team at the University of Maryland, led by Prof. Hal Daumé III, is recruiting paid participants for a research study exploring how people ask questions about trans topics. We are also examining how experts respond to these questions and how AI systems succeed—or fall short—in addressing these information needs. In particular, we hope to understand whether and how experts (and AI systems) tailor responses based on the asker’s background knowledge.

    We are seeking participants who:

    • Are at least 18 years old

    • Have experience observing or answering questions about transness or trans issues in a formal capacity (e.g., support group facilitators, LGBT center staff, community advocates, etc.)

    What participation involves:

    • A video interview (1 hour, audio and video recorded)

    • A self-paced data collection exercise (~1 hour)

    • Compensation: $60 total or $30/hr, whichever is higher (i.e., if you spend longer than an hour on the self-paced exercise, you will be compensated accordingly)

If you or someone in your network may be interested, we invite you to share the following screener link: https://go.umd.edu/1xe0.

The REACH Lab at Virginia Tech is currently recruiting participants nationwide for a paid, fully virtual research study to better understand the unique daily experiences of multigender-attracted (e.g., bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual, demisexual, etc.) adults and their romantic partners. Specifically, we are examining how stress linked to individuals' intersecting identities (e.g., discrimination, harassment, biphobia, stereotypes about multigender-attracted individuals) impact adults' relationships, how partners support each other during these moments of stress, and other health outcomes. We hope that this study will enhance the inclusivity of couple therapy and will inform the
public of the harms caused by harmful rhetoric and policies.

Each participant can earn up to $120 for completing the study. Participants must participate in the study with their partner.

Our study is approved by the Institutional Review Board at Virginia Tech (IRB # 23-399), our research team includes LGBTQ+-identifying members, and all members of our research team are SafeZone trained. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Meagan Brem, and co-Investigators include Dr. Brian Feinstein, and Dr. Ryan Shorey.

Our study is titled “Constructing a Developmentally and Socially Contextualized Model of Minority Stress for Gender Minority Youth.” Youth would be eligible to participate if they are between the ages of 13-19, identify as a gender minority individual (e.g., transgender, non-binary, or other non-cis identities) and speak English. The purpose of this study is to produce a theoretical framework that works to illustrate how gender minority youth experience, manage and are affected by identity-specific or minority stressors. This study will also examine how developmental, social and other factors could influence the processes involved in this framework. The hope is that this work assists in developing and refining affirmative mental health interventions and supports for gender minority youth and their caregivers.

This study is approved by the Indiana University IRB (#24438) and has a waiver of parental consent to protect youth who are not out to parents/guardians. Additionally, we will be taking additional measures to protect potentially identifiable information from participants and ensure that such information is only reported in aggregate and scrubbed from any publications or analysis. Youth that participate in an interview as part of the study will be compensated $25 in the form of an Amazon gift card for their time.
