Save AmeriCorps - Take Action Today

Image description

Last week, our organization was hit hard by the sudden suspension of the GrizzlyCorps program, following nationwide funding cuts to AmeriCorps that have affected over 1,000 programs and 32,000 AmeriCorps members across the country. For small non-profits like SMMFSC, the impact is massive: our two fellows assist with critical wildfire mitigation efforts and community education. As a former GrizzlyCorps fellow myself, I can personally attest to the GrizzlyCorps program’s value— through the fellowship I learned about wildfire mitigation. GrizzlyCorps program leaders are now investigating the legality of the stop-work order and working toward a solution so fellows can complete their service term through July. The future of AmeriCorps, a domestic counterpart to the Peace Corps, remains uncertain, but its contributions to education, disaster relief, and environmental stewardship are undeniable. We encourage everyone to take action by contacting Congress: https://voicesforservice.org/take-action/contact-congress/.

You can also make a donation today to support early-career positions at SMMFSC such as the GrizzlyCorps fellowship.

Wildfire Preparedness Week

Image description

At SMMFSC, we know that wildfire preparedness is a year-round activity, but we invite you to join us this week in taking some extra actions to become wildfire-ready. Follow us on social media where we’ll make daily posts about actions you can take. We recognize that many people in LA are dealing with the exhausting process of post-fire recovery and rebuilding— and need no reminder this week of the importance of working together as a community on wildfire preparedness. Community is key in every stage of resilience. So wherever you are at this week, we encourage you to work with your neighbors, because together we can create FIREWISE communities and a more resilient future.
