MEMBER HIGHLIGHT

Literacy Mid-South

We are excited to introduce you to Johnny Blount, the Director of Collaborative Action at Literacy Mid-South! Their mission is to equip their community to pursue opportunities by facilitating equitable access to literacy across the lifespan. One of the aspects of their work that struck us the most is the way that the word "community" is embraced and the way it impacts each of their programs. Individuals of all ages and backgrounds have the opportunity to participate in literacy programs and join a network of collaborative projects that includes some of the Mid-South's finest educational institutions.

For Johnny, one of the most crucial deciding factors in building a life-long interest in reading is the ability to see oneself reflected on the page. Access to culturally relevant books that represent an individual's identities, languages, and experiences makes all the difference. Being a part of the NBAA, specifically sharing resources, aligning strategies, and working alongside other book access organizations from across the country gives Johnny hope for the future. If that resonates with you, we'd love for you to join us!

Did we mention that this organization has an exciting annual tradition? This summer, they will have their Lit Bag giveaway in partnership with community centers, summer camps, and neighborhood organizations. These Lit Bags will be filled with high-interest, age-appropriate books and materials to support whole-family literacy. What an amazing way to promote summer reading!
