Sex Ed for Everyone: Risk Profiles

Thursday, May 8th, 6-8pm

Presenter: @Rhapsody_in_Blue
Rhapsody_In_Blue has been an active part of MI fetish and kink culture for the last 7 years. She is an educator, podcaster, community builder, advocate, and Dom with masochistic switch tendencies. She enjoys clever conversation, solving complicated problems with creative people, and brown liquor. She is constantly practicing and perfecting her communication skills and karaoke performances. Accepts bribes in the form of stickers, coffee, and donations to her Lansing based kink venue The Gallery.

Kink is more accessible than ever these days, but that does not mean that it is free of risk.

Join local kink educator, Rhapsody, as we discuss the importance of critical thinking, personal responsibility, and self-awareness as you develop your own unique risk profile. The intention is to give attendees a basic understanding of potential harm to consider when engaging with kink, and how to determine which risks they are comfortable accepting in their own practices.

While this class is intended for novices, experienced Lifestyle folks are also encouraged to attend.

The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre Project in response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man, in Laramie, Wyoming. Kaufman and the other company members visited Laramie on six occasions and interviewed residents, members of the police force, and Matthew’s friends, in an attempt to understand what happened, and why. They were also interested in the possibility that theatre, more than any other medium, would allow people to engage with and reflect on the issues brought to public attention by Matthew’s murder, such as homophobia, hatred, intolerance, and fear.

We are excited to ring in Star Wars Day in style at our favorite local cantina with a galactic after party featuring Lansing-based rebel, DJ Fudgie!

Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Admission to the after party is included in your Hyperdrive ticket price, but additional friends are welcome to join for only the after party with a $2 cover charge at the door after 9:30 pm!

A platonic version of speed dating, speed friending is an event where people can meet and – hopefully – make friendships. If you are interested in dates, there will be indicators available to add to your name badge to let other speed frienders know that you are open to potential romantic connections! Just remember, consent is critical!

After the event, hang out with your new friends - and old friends, too! Dance to music offered by local rebel scum, DJ Fudgie! Try your luck with a 50/50 raffle, or throw in for a Light Side vs Dark Side gift basket! (Don't forget to tip your wonderful bartenders!) Raffle winners will be announced at midnight to start off May the 4th the right way!

There is no required dress code. Wear whatever is comfortable for you! (Including Star Wars costumes if you want!)

For those who are familiar with the Lansing Area AIDS Network, you have seen us offering HIV testing at various locations throughout Mid-Michigan over the 40-year history of our organization. In 2024, we expanded to include HCV testing and added syphilis testing in February of this year. It is the goal of LAAN’s Prevention and Harm Reduction program to continue these testing services – and add additional services – at no cost to the communities that we serve. While we receive funding to cover the HIV testing, we rely on the support of our neighbors to purchase any additional STI tests.

If you are a trans or nonbinary adult currently living in the United States, you may be eligible for a paid research study being conducted by transmasculine nonbinary doctoral student Jamie Taber and the Baruch College Sexual and Gender Minority Health (SGMH)

lab! Participation will involve completing a 30-minute online survey to test and provide feedback on a new measure of trans-specific experiences with dissociation, which we recently created in collaboration with trans focus group members. We are especially

interested in the perspectives of Black, Indigenous, and other trans people of color. If you are eligible, complete a brief Zoom verification call, and complete the full survey, you will receive a $10 electronic gift card.

The Transgender Research Informed Consent (TRICON) disclosure statement, which includes detailed information about ethical concerns specific to trans communities, can be found at https://linktr.ee/TransDissociate.

You can also find more information and complete the screening survey at https://baruch.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1OnJ0hpxbbcA0Zw.

The REACH Lab at Virginia Tech is currently recruiting participants nationwide for a paid, fully virtual research study to better understand the unique daily experiences of multigender-attracted (e.g., bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual, demisexual, etc.) adults and their romantic partners. Specifically, we are examining how stress linked to individuals' intersecting identities (e.g., discrimination, harassment, biphobia, stereotypes about multigender-attracted individuals) impact adults' relationships, how partners support each other during these moments of stress, and other health outcomes. We hope that this study will enhance the inclusivity of couple therapy and will inform the
public of the harms caused by harmful rhetoric and policies.

Each participant can earn up to $120 for completing the study. Participants must participate in the study with their partner.

Our study is approved by the Institutional Review Board at Virginia Tech (IRB # 23-399), our research team includes LGBTQ+-identifying members, and all members of our research team are SafeZone trained. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Meagan Brem, and co-Investigators include Dr. Brian Feinstein, and Dr. Ryan Shorey.

Determine if you are eligible at https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5605Xy79AXubIRo

Our study is titled “Constructing a Developmentally and Socially Contextualized Model of Minority Stress for Gender Minority Youth.” Youth would be eligible to participate if they are between the ages of 13-19, identify as a gender minority individual (e.g., transgender, non-binary, or other non-cis identities) and speak English. The purpose of this study is to produce a theoretical framework that works to illustrate how gender minority youth experience, manage and are affected by identity-specific or minority stressors. This study will also examine how developmental, social and other factors could influence the processes involved in this framework. The hope is that this work assists in developing and refining affirmative mental health interventions and supports for gender minority youth and their caregivers.

This study is approved by the Indiana University IRB (#24438) and has a waiver of parental consent to protect youth who are not out to parents/guardians. Additionally, we will be taking additional measures to protect potentially identifiable information from participants and ensure that such information is only reported in aggregate and scrubbed from any publications or analysis. Youth that participate in an interview as part of the study will be compensated $25 in the form of an Amazon gift card for their time.
