ABOUT THE WEBINAR:

Protozoa are single-celled organisms that can infect a cat's digestive system, causing gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea. Common protozoal parasites, including Giardia and Tritrichomonas foetus, can lead to inflammation and other digestive disturbances. The severity and duration of symptoms can vary; some cats may experience occasional episodes of diarrhea, while others may suffer from persistent diarrhea. This webinar will explore the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of diarrhea caused by protozoal infections in cats.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Lo obtained his D.V.M. degree from National Chiayi University and his Ph.D. from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Mississippi State University. He has expertise in virology, clinical microbiology, and immunology. Previously, he worked as the Director of the Reference Lab at Bioguard Corporation. Currently, he works as a Technical Specialist at Bioguard Corporation.

WHAT DOES

“ANTIBIOTIC RANK” MEANS?

The use of antibiotics is crucial for maintaining both human and animal health, ensuring food safety, and preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases. However, growing concerns about antibiotic resistance have highlighted the need to prioritize veterinary antibiotics based on their importance, usage, and potential risks. This ranking system is designed to help veterinarians make informed choices regarding antibiotic use.

The AMEG (Antimicrobial Advice ad hoc Expert Group) and AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) propose a classification of antibiotics into four categories:

Category A - “Avoid” (Restricted): These antibiotics are not authorized for veterinary use but are approved for human medicine in the EU. They are critically important for human health and should never be used in animals.

Category B - “Restrict” (Tertiary/3rd Line): These antibiotics are highly significant for both human and animal health, particularly for treating multidrug-resistant bacteria. Their use carries a higher risk of promoting resistance, which poses a serious concern in both veterinary and human healthcare.

Category C - “Caution” (Secondary/2nd Line): Broad-spectrum antibiotics in this category are important for both human and animal health. Resistance can develop more easily, but alternative options exist in human medicine, although few alternatives are available in veterinary medicine for certain conditions.

Category D - “Prudence” (Primary/1st Line): These antibiotics have a well-established track record of high efficacy and safety. Ideally, they are narrow-spectrum and should be used as the first choice whenever possible.
