Welcome to the November 2024 CBP newsletter

Artist of the month

Image description

Rich Jellyman

Artist of the Month is an ongoing series where we highlight one of our members. This month we are pleased to introduce artist Rich Jellyman selected and interviewed by Paul Newman.

Rich Jellyman makes paintings that reference internet culture and incorporate technology in the selection of subject matter. Utilising images that display a certain kind of internet sensibility – disposable phone photos, surreal mashups taken from Reddit threads, bad photoshop, memes, AI and video game glitches. His most recent series of paintings are anthropomorphic portraits that use AI image generation software to appropriate likenesses.

HEAD BLOCKER, Graphite, collage, oil bars on found cardboard, 180 x 135cm, 2024 (detail)

OPENER: Sally Taylor

Opener shows recent works by Sally Taylor on found cardboard and mainly works-in-progress. The exhibition is a culmination of recent drawing activity, the formation of collaged objects and experimental installations made in the artist’s studio at AHH Studio Collective, Malton, North Yorkshire, where she is also a Founding Director.

In June 2024, the artist undertook a residency at Vessel with painter, Deb Covell, and Opener builds on the experimentation that took place during this time of collaboration and discussion. Artist Deb Covell has curated this show as part of the artists’ ongoing dialogue with materials, making rituals, methods and processes.

Both artists focused on the theme of ‘play’ during their residency – using Richard Serra’s Verb List (1967) as a starting point for making and presenting works in conjunction with each other. In this show, Taylor’s works remain ‘playful’ and unfinished and may take on new incarnations following on from this presentation.

Ground Evolution

2017 saw a 'Ground Breaking' Event situated on the site of Old Granada Studios where the foundations of Factory International would be built. Susan Gunn's practice has involved the use of sedimentary rock and natural earth pigment. The Manchester International Festival event was inspiration for the Ground Evolution Triptych. Gunn collected earth, granite and concrete from the disturbed ground and recycled the material to create a monumental elegy to the site of creativity and change. The concept of the artwork was to create a lasting metaphor of the evolved material and the changing face of creativity and industry in the city.

Beep Painting Biennial 2024: I won’t stay in a world without love

The Beep Painting Prize 2024 exhibition features over 440 artists from around the world. All were asked to respond to the theme of ‘I won’t stay in a world without love’, a lyric taken from a discarded Beatles song. This year there was a change to the application process designed to shake things up, include more artists and make the process easier for overseas artists in light of some of the obstacles caused by Brexit.

As usual artists were able to submit up to two paintings based loosely on this year’s musical theme. Out of all the applications, a long list was drawn up. The long listed artists were then given the title of a song from a rescued 7” vinyl record to create a new painted cover for it. The painted record covers each measuring 18cm x 18cm, and the music will form the main content of the exhibition.

The panel of judges then selected a shortlist of their top 40 artists from the original applications which will be displayed in the exhibition, from which the winner of the 2024 Beep Painting Biennial will be chosen.

Includes CBP artists: Day Bowman, Ruth Calland, Gordon Dalton, Natalie Dowse, Abigail Hampsey, Paula MacArthurEnzo Marra, Gavin Maughfling, Donna McLean, Stephen Palmer, Sean Williams.

ING Discerning Eye

The ING Discerning Eye has been a key part of the British art scene for 26 years, featuring artworks selected by six figures from the art world: two artists, two collectors, and two critics.

This year’s selectors are artists Adebanji Alade and Nina Murdoch, collectors Carol Leonard and Gabrielle Blackman, and critics Paul Carey-Kent and Will Gompertz. Each selector independently curates their own section, creating six mini-exhibitions within the larger show. Each of the 6 selectors handpicks works they feel represents the best in British art today. They also invite artists they know and love to take part in the exhibition alongside those selected in the nationwide open call.

Paul Carey-Kent has selected Phil Illingworth as one of his artists for his guest artist section of this year’s ING Discerning Eye, along with work by fellow CBP Members Day Bowman and Roland Hicks. Marguerite Horner is also in the exhibition.
