Cool Wirral Climate Challenge: Travel

The final option in the travel theme of the Cool Wirral Climate Challenge is to commit to changing a car journey to cycling.

Cycling emits 21g of COper kilometre (calculated by combining the emissions associated with bike manufacturing and disposal and from producing the extra food required to ‘fuel’ the cyclist). This total is less than a tenth of the per kilometre emissions of driving a car.

Pledge to Get On Your Bike!

The Smart Green Journey app can help you to plan your cycling trips and tracks how much carbon and money you save compared to driving a car. It also allows users to plan the quickest or quietest routes, track journey progress, check local air quality and find secure bike parking facilities across the Liverpool City region.

You can now borrow children's 'Wild About...' packs from the four main Wirral libraries at Birkenhead, Wallasey, West Kirby and Bebington. Each bag contains 3 nature-themed books, a craft activity (with all the supplies you need) and lots of eco inspiration to get you out and about in your local green and blue spaces.

Each library taking part has a KS1 and a KS2 bag. To borrow either bag, take the information card from the shelves or ask at the library counter. You'll also find lots of books available to loan from the dedicated nature hub spaces.

Introduction of Wirral-wide Smoke Control Rules

Wirral Council will be introducing a Smoke Control Order to cover the whole of the borough. Properties within Smoke Control Orders are not permitted to emit smoke from a chimney, boiler or furnace unless they are burning authorised fuels, such as anthracite or semi-anthracite, gas or a low volatile steam coal. Unauthorised fuels such as wood or ordinary coal can only be burned in a smoke control area when using a DEFRA-approved appliance.

See the Wirral View website for information on the smoke control order and permitted fuels and appliances:
