Welcome to This Week's View from the Mountain

In a week where we reviewed GenCon, the Edinburgh Fringe passed the halfway mark, and we bid adieu to the Summer Olympics for another four years, we've been talking boardgames -- along with a bit of sports. Read on for some recent reviews, a new puzzle, and to discover some of our writer's favorite sports-themed games.

Recent Posts

We publish new articles, reviews, and lists almost a dozen times a week. Here's some of the things we've been talking about in the past week.

Talking About Sports Games

The conclusion of the Olympics got us thinking about some of our favorite sports-themed board games. Here are some of our team's favorites.

Zoo Ball is a chaotic, zany, flicking extravaganza that you can learn in minutes, and play in a quarter of an hour. It's also a pretty fun time. (Andy Matthews)

Baseball Highlights: 2045
is nothing short of a home run. Comprised of a series of mini-games within the greater game, it plays best as a slugfest between two players vying to win the World Series of the future. Instead of spending two and a half hours at your local ballpark, take a leisurely 45 minute swing with some hot dogs and cracker jack. (Abram Towle)

Eleven: Football Manager
is a game about the economics of managing a football (soccer) club, putting the right players on the field, board room decisions and even getting sponsors for your team. Meeple Mountain's Justin Bell reckons Eleven is the closest he has ever seen to a game about the business of sports that actually works. (Andrew Holmes)

Bloodbowl is a steaming mess. Nothing in that game can be said to be designed for balance. Yet there is something appealing about Orcs and Elves tossing around a pigskin (and the occasional Snotling).  (K. David Ladage)

This Week's Puzzle

Since the start of July, we've published over 40 board game reviews. Here are the names of five of those games, albeit with the letters slightly out of order. Without using internet resources, can you unscramble all five? If so, send your answers to us at: [email protected]
