| Dear {$firstname}, Welcome to the September 2024 Newsletter. We are back from summer jaunts, the air is cooling and it's time to get involved again in community affairs.

| Saturday 7th September, 10:00 to 13:00 |
The Society will be hosting an Open Day in the Court Room of the Town Hall between 10.00am and 1.00pm on Saturday 7th September, both for members and for the public in general. This will be a free exhibition showing how Romsey has developed and changed over the past 50 years and outlining some of the ways the Society has influenced this. There will also be an opportunity for people to tell us how they would like to see the town change in the future and what they might like the society to be doing over the next 50 years. Tea, coffee and cake will be available and we hope members will join us and invite their neighbours, friends and family to join us too. |

| WALK: Ashley Tuesday 10th September |
Our autumn walks kick off with a 5 mile walk over the heathland of the former Ashley Walk Bombing Range, where some WW2 targets are still visible. The route goes along Hampton Ridge, and back through Godshill. There is a total of about 400 feet of uphill walking, and one stile. Optional lunch at the Lamb Inn, Nomansland.

Most people hardly notice the little dark animals flitting above at dusk, assuming them to be birds heading home to roost. This is a chance to properly discover the little bats which inhabit our town, feeding on the evening insects that we often find annoying. Starting from Palmerston’s statue in the Market Place, Nik Knight the Hampshire County Bat recorder will tell us a bit about bats before we walk down to the Memorial park and on to Sadlers Mill with his bat detector.

| Moths – the Weird and the Wonderful
Early on the morning of Saturday 3rd August, moth expert, Tim Norriss arrived to check the two Mercury Vapour Light traps that he had set the previous evening in Sue Taylor’s garden close to the Abbey Green. There were more than twenty of us there to see which night flying moths he had trapped. Tim was the County Moth Recorder for Hampshire for many years. He has been trapping moths since 1991 and we were all astounded at his knowledge. As Tim gently extracted he identified them and passed them around, many in the safety of small transparent containers, so we could clearly see the beautiful detail of their wings and antennae. He identified around 60 species from the two traps. At the end of our session, all the moths were released to find shelter until their next feeding foray that evening. You can read a full account in the next Magazine. To download a spreadsheet of the moths seen, click HERE |
