Vaping Update. Just One Story - Is our Government replicating mistakes made with Tobacco legislation in the 1950’s? It’s time for decisive, positive action for change.

Simah Herman said she was sure she was going to die last month as she sat in the car unable to breathe, her father racing her to the hospital.

“I just remember feeling like absolute...nothing. Like I just couldn't do anything,” Herman, 18, said. “I couldn’t drink water. I couldn’t move”.The doctors at UCLA Medical Center were also stumped. A chest X-ray showed white hazy areas at the bottom of her lungs. Less than 48 hours later, chest X-rays showed that her lungs were filled with white — they were inflamed and full of fluid. How Effective is Harm Reduction Only drug Policy?

Consider this: Legalizing something harmful never removes the harm. It just changes the legal consequences usually for those who promote, produce or in other ways profit financially from the "legalized" substance or activity with little to no regard for the negative impact on individuals or society-at-large.

Refer to the following for current evidence:

Drug Free Australia impacts at National Essential Health Summit, July 2024

Essential Health Summit

With over 1000 registered, it was a priviledge to interact with medical and allied health professionals at an annual conference in Adelaide. Many were keen to link into our drug prevention initiatives, especially the Youth Prevention Influencer program with whom we partner with Rotary.

Many thanks to our university student, Deeanne, who is on workplace placement with DFA, for her insights and support for 2 days of the conference.

Many attendees were also keen to receive copies of Elaine Walters OAM’s book – Street Drugs – the New Addiction Industry, as they could align to the need to give higher profile to drug prevention initiaitves – including education and community health literacy.
