| GIARDIA IN DOGS: FACT SHEET |
|
Commonly known as Giardia duodenalis or Giardia lamblia or Giardia intestinalis |
|
Giardia duodenalis is a protozoan intestinal pathogen found worldwide. It causes infections ranging from asymptomatic to chronic diarrhea and malabsorption. Giardia presents in two forms: - Trophozoites (vegetative form) live in the intestines of infected dogs. The structure has eight flagella used for mobility and attachment to the intestinal wall.
- Cysts are trophozoites surrounded by a protective outer shell, which are then excreted in an infected dog's stool. They are capable of being transmitted to the next host as they are stable and can survive in the environment for months.

|
Source of infection: Swallowing infectious cysts found in the feces of infected dogs can lead to transmission of the infection. Occurrence:in the intestines of dogs Common Symptoms - Acute or sudden onset of diarrhea
- Soft or water stool with mucus
- Abdominal discomfort
- Weight loss
- Dehydration
- Vomiting
- Excessive, foul-smelling gas
- Poor coat condition
Behaviors of Dogs with Giardia: Lethargy due to dehydration and decreased appetite Prevention of Giardia infection: - Wash hands frequently
- Disinfect potential Giardia areas
