Inside Project Butterfly

Composers on their creative journey

What was happening during July with Project Butterfly? Hopefully, you are on vacation, but our composers are not! In our recent residency interview series, we sat down with Marco Attura, Paavo Korpijaakko, and Beniamin Baczewski, who shared insights into their inspirations, processes, and impressions driving the creative process of the Butterfly opera.

The composers also shared their first impressions of the stories written by students and foreshadowed their musical aspirations for The Butterfly Project Opera.

“We defined the scenes, the voices of the characters, and the overall character of the music, which must adapt perfectly to the time and place,” reveals Attura about the first steps toward the opera made during the residency in Gdansk.

As summer progresses, the composition process is underway, and “we will continue until October. In the meantime, we will meet online to share and discuss our progress,” says Baczewski.
