WomenNC Scholars Leadership Program Relaunches with New Vision!

Our Scholars Leadership Program is back, but with some changes!

Image description

During the 2023-2024 cycle, WomenNC chose to pause our Scholars Leadership Program. In a post-covid world, we knew that our program needed to be reevaluated and reimagined to better serve our students. Throughout 2023 and 2024, WomenNC had countless meetings with alumni, board members, university partners, and community advisors. From this feedback, we are so excited to present the changes to our Scholars Leadership Program!

Our reimagined program includes two separate track options: the Advocacy Scholars Community Leadership Program and the Research Scholars Leadership Development Program.

Our Advocacy Scholars Community Leadership Program is for the future changemakers of the world! Armed with research done by former WomenNC Scholars, the Advocacy Community Leaders create a plan to promote change in North Carolina. After attending Advocacy Bootcamp, our Advocacy Scholars are partnered with a local organization working for change within their topic, begin to advocate, using research as a building block. This program culminates with virtual attendance at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women Conference. This program is largely geared towards college seniors.

Our Research Scholars Leadership Development Program is an 18-month program where our Scholars focus on gender equality through research. The Research Scholars are partnered with a FEMtor from the community, and spend months investigating gender disparity in North Carolina. Following their research, students then enter the Advocacy cohort, and begin to advocate for change based on the research they conducted. This program culminates with in-person attendance at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women Conference in New York City. This program is largely geared towards college juniors.

Both programs overlap in many ways. All WomenNC Scholars will attend five professional development workshops, focusing on public speaking, networking, research methods, policy analysis, and advocacy. Each track also completes a day-long bootcamp seminar to ensure that all Scholars start on the same playing field. Advocacy Scholars attend an advocacy bootcamp in the fall semester, while Research Scholars complete a research bootcamp in the spring semester, as well as an advocacy bootcamp in the fall semester. As in the past, all WomenNC Scholars will have the ability to present their work at a Local to Global Forum and receive feedback from community leaders. Finally, all WomenNC Scholars will receive a "Welcome Kit," including branded items, rubrics, and examples of completed work. Each student will also receive an award of completion along with WomenNC braided cords to wear at their university graduation.

Get to Know Our Board:

Dr. Krystal Foxx

WomenNC Summer intern Josie Leach sat down with Programming Chair and WomenNC Board of Directors member, Dr. Krystal Foxx, to chat about her role in developing the new Scholars Leadership Program.

Dr. Krystal Foxx recently took on a role as the new programming chair of WomenNC and has played a vital role in developing the scholars program that lies at the heart of this non-profit organization. Her position includes helping with the marketing aspects of the non-profit and more specifically engaging with the community partners such as colleges and universities.

Outside of her work with WomenNC, Dr. Foxx holds a position in higher education. Her extensive background in research and data as well as with other nonprofit organizations, has given her a strong foundation for taking on a role within the WomenNC community. It is her research into STEM education that led Foxx to become curious about how to help historically marginalized students better navigate STEM spaces where they are very often underrepresented.

Thus, in alignment with WomenNC, it is education that holds an important place in driving Foxx’s efforts towards equality. In particular, Foxx is excited by the Scholars program because “it puts an emphasis on the efforts to understand what resources, tools, and information are needed to help women and girls achieve equality.”

Furthermore, Foxx appreciates that because scholars are given freedom to explore areas that fit their specific passions and interests, there is ample opportunity for these young women to research STEM advocacy and gather data focused on creating more equitable outcomes.

Additionally, Foxx notes that “WomenNC's dedication to research and advocacy is commendable because of the local to global outreach and the impact of their research efforts when it comes to addressing gender discrimination.” While she is a strong advocate for more formal educational efforts such as those found in the scholars program, she believes that there are many different pathways for promoting gender equality.

Foxx understands the importance of “empowering women and girls to be change agents who make decisions that impact both the local and global community” whether this be through scholarly research, or more informal conversations within the community, Foxx is encouraged by every effort in the pathway to gender equality. By simply existing, WomanNC and other nonprofits based around equality have the ability to make an impact, “by showing the value of investing in missions that lead to advancement of women and girls.”

Serving on the board of WomenNC Foxx has come to better understand how empowering and necessary it is to work alongside like minded individuals who share her passion for gender equality. She views the organization as creating a positive feedback loop by working with local universities to “identify outstanding leaders ready to be guided on all aspects of gender equality” in turn building and uplifting “a generation of leaders who will continue to eliminate gender discrimination.”

Hand in hand with WomenNC, Foxx understands that generations to come possess the skills to be true drivers of change and thus is eager to encourage passionate individuals to apply for the scholars program. To these prospective students Foxx shares, "I would say join this program to make an impact that will empower women and girls in the years to come. This work is greater than you and I, but it requires our leadership now." Be it through the scholars program, volunteering, or an internship opportunity; anyone who is committed to the cause of fighting for gender equality is encouraged to get involved with WomenNC!
