Dear friends,

October greetings! This coming month brings the annual High Holidays in the Jewish calendar. From Rosh Hashone biz Simkhas Toyre many of our community will be celebrating the Jewish New Year and the following journey, which takes one from quiet self-reflection and atonement for past misdeeds, through communal appreciation for the harvest and the autumn season, to joy and celebration at the end. It can be a long road, but it's nice to know that dancing and music will be waiting, a few weeks after we hear the shofar blow.

Despite the holiday schedule, there is still a lot going on in Berlin's Yiddish community this month! There are two Shtetl Berlin zingerayen, a klezmer session, poetry, and concerts to attend. All info below.

With wishes for a sweet new year, an easy fast, and that you will be surrounded by friends, family, and community,
In peace,
Patrick and the Shtetl Berlin team

Berlin is an important reference point for Yiddish culture and the Berlin Yiddish scene is diverse and lively! This evening is part 4 of an ongoing series at Haus für Poesie curated by Jordan Lee Schnee. Five Berlin artists who write, sing and perform in Yiddish will be guests: poets Yael Merlini and Jake Schneider will present their original poetry, af Yiddish, visual artist Ella Ponizovsky Bergelson will perform a large-scale calligraphic work based on Yiddish poetry, and the musical duo Sveta Kundish & Patrick Farrell will perform some of their original songs based on Yiddish poetry.

A very poetic and beautifully artistic evening! In Yiddish and English.

SHTETL BERLIN

We at Shtetl are committed to continuing our work of promoting Yiddish culture in Berlin. While that is the main focus of our organization, we want to encourage all in our community to remain mindful of the current conflicts in Ukraine and Israel/Palestine, do what you can to support those in need, and continue working for a better and more just world for all.
