Weather was agreeable and hounds were keen for our opening autumn hunt Saturday!

Unfortunately, this Wednesday's high is forecast to be too hot for hauling hounds in the afternoon. Instead, our huntsman will take our bitch hounds to the "fox pen"—an enclosed area with a carefully managed population of coyotes—to get some exercise and, for our new entry, practice following scent. If interested in joining/assisting, please contact Steve.

Intro to Foxhunting

We had another well-attended intro session on Sunday. The next session will be this coming Sunday, the 15th and the final session will be on Saturday the 21st when participants will join us for that day's hunt!

Tack Sale! – Still plenty of great tack, apparel, and other items available!

In conjunction with the Intro sessions, we will once again be offering an opportunity for folks to rid their tack rooms of unwanted items and/or purchase needed items. All safe, in-good-usable-condition items are welcome—bridles, saddles, breeches, hunt appointments, grooming supplies—if it's riding-related, bring it on! Sellers may choose to donate all or part of their sales to LFA, but are not required to do so. Items may be dropped off on the day of the intro lesson or you may coordinate with Lexie Trickett (via Facebook messenger or at 913-271-5406) to get your item there.

Kansas Hunt Week – October 5-12

The second annual Kansas Hunt Week is coming up in October! We'll kick off the week on the evening of Saturday, October 5, with a Staff/Welcome Party at the home of MFH LTC (ret) Jim and Angela Fain. We will host guests at our McGuire's fixture on Sunday, then move to the Flint Hills for hunts on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Sport will be provided by the Flint Hills Hunt and Juan Tomás Hounds. We'll end with a bang with our formal opening hunt at McGuire's on Saturday, October 12. There is no cost to FLH members to participate in any of the hunts, but please do register here. NOTE: FLH members do still need to pay for the catered opening hunt breakfast. Pay via PayPal here

FLH's participation in Kansas Hunt Week allows us to meet and share our beautiful fixtures with fellow foxhunters from around the country.

Opening Hunt 2024

It's hard to believe, but Opening Hunt is coming up fast! This year, our opening is scheduled on the last day of Kansas Hunt Week, so we look forward to having many guests! Please note our annual Staff Party will be held on Saturday, October 5 to allow time for travel between Hunt Week fixtures. Opening will be on Saturday, October 12. In addition to our traditional pre-hunt stirrup cup and blessing of the hounds, we will also enjoy a presentation by the Fort Riley Mounted Color Guard! Please register online if you plan to attend.

Receive Recognition for FLH Volunteerism

As FLH is part of the Fort Leavenworth Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (FMWR) program, members of the Fort Leavenworth Hunt can record and receive recognition from Fort Leavenworth for volunteer hours spent supporting the hunt. Recording volunteer hours is an individual choice and not a requirement, but is strongly supported by the FLH Masters. Recording hours both allows for individual recognition by Fort Leavenworth FMWR and for Fort Leavenworth leadership to understand the significant time contributed by our members to make FLH successful as an organization. The guide to the right will take you through the process of registering, applying for positions, and recording your hours. Please contact FLH Master Candy Smith with any questions.

Kennel Needs

The kennel wishlist has been updated!

As the hunting season approaches, let's make sure our kennel staff have everything they need to keep the hounds healthy and happy! View the Amazon Wish List here

Performance Trials at MVH

FLH will be participating in the fall performance trial hosted by the Mission Valley Hunt this November. Performance trials involve several hunts each bringing five hounds to be hunted together as a pack under a guest huntsman. This allows judges to evaluate the performance of the hounds in the same conditions on the same day and to award the top performers.

FLH members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The event takes place November 21 to 23, beginning with a welcome party Thursday evening followed by hunting on Friday and Saturday. The fee to participate is $300 for the full weekend (includes welcome party, breakfasts, an awards dinner, and hunting) or $150 for a single day. (For juniors, $150 for the weekend and $90 for one day.) Please note our reciprocal agreement with MVH does not apply to this event. Learn more and download registration and hold harmless forms here.

Please note FLH will not hunt on November 23rd in order to support the performance trials.

LAC Information

Image description

A Local Access Credential (LAC) allows civilians to enter Fort Leavenworth without having to stop at the visitor center each time. Members needing to obtain or renew a LAC must complete the Applicant Information and Criminal History sections of the LAC application (click image to download) and submit it to Master Candy Smith. You may also email your info to Candy or provide it over the phone (913-948-0189) and she will complete the form for you. She will then submit it to the FMWR Director, who will sign it and forward it to the Visitor Center (VCC) for processing. Current processing time is 2.5–3 weeks. Renewing LAC holders, please note this is a new form.

For those who need only temporary access to Ft. Leavenworth (for the hunt ball, for example), please register for a one-day pass online.
