Help Improve Cycling and Walking in Thame

The Thame Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) seeks to make walking and cycling easier and more enjoyable for all in Thame.

Oxfordshire County Council
wants local residents to point out where improvements are needed, so that when funding become available, the LCWIP will provide the framework for authorities to develop strategic plans for improvement.

Around 400 comments have already been lodged on the online map.

If there's a cycle path or walkway that you feel needs improvement, click here for more information or head straight to the online map, have a say, and do your bit to make sure Thame gets the right infrastructure for making cycling and walking around the town safer.

Open until 26th September 2024.

and in Bucks

While you are at it, if you want to comment on Buckinghamshire's LCWIP then this is also open for comments at the moment. This is particularly important when it comes to raising awareness of how important an Active Travel connection to both Haddenham and Long Crendon are. Have your say here by 11:59pm on Sunday 13 October 2024.

    An update from Cuttle Brook Conservation Volunteers

    We’ve passed a major milestone in our planning for the next phase of the Cuttle Brook habitat improvement plans and we have now moved into the implementation phase after nearly two years in the planning. Working under the guidance of River Thame Conservation Trust (RTCT), Cuttle Brook Volunteers (CBCV) completed a detailed topographical survey of the bed of the brook during the winter of 2022/3. RTCT took this data and, working with us, put forward improvement proposals for Environment Agency (EA) approval, including thorough flood risk assessment. The process got rather stalled with the EA but, after lots of further input from RTCT, the permit to carry out the planned works was finally received in late August this year, so now it is full steam ahead to get as much done as possible while the river levels allow.

    A wide range of works are planned or underway including:

    • Overgrowth clearance to allow light into the brook;
    • importing and placing up to 30 tonnes of gravel to regulate the gradient of the bed and to provide better habitat for fish and invertebrates;
    • Creating natural habitat structures and revetments at places along the brook to protect the banks, improve velocity and mobilise silt that has built up over the years;
    • Improvements to one weir to enable fish passage and removal of a second, redundant, weir;
    • Creation of a ‘leaky dam’ to better utilise upstream floodplain storage; and
    • Digging a scrape to create greater diversity of plants and animals using the floodplain meadows.

    The works will take place through a mixture of volunteers and contractors, with professional oversight from RTCT. There will be plenty for volunteers to get their teeth into - no experience required and equipment provided, so please get in touch by emailing ‘[email protected] if you would like to be involved.

        Lopemede Farm Wetland Creation: A Landmark Biodiversity Net Gain Site

        This September, Energy Saving Homes is back in partnership with Oxford Preservation Trust: visit an Energy Saving Home during the much-loved annual Oxford Open Doors on 14 and 15 September. Find out how to make your home warmer in winter, cooler in summer, a healthier place to live and hopefully cheaper to run!

        Energy Saving Homes are a bit different to the traditional Oxford Open Doors locations: they show how ordinary people have cut energy costs in their homes, through small, cheap measures, and through larger renovation projects – from draught proofing to wall and loft insulation, solar panels and battery storage, heat pumps, and double and triple glazing.

        This is a chance to hear from homeowners how they navigated the often-confusing landscape of eco-renovation. Find out what went well and what was difficult, what they learned, and what further steps they are planning to take. You will be able to speak directly to them, and sometimes their contractors, and ask your questions.

        Details will be found on the Energy Saving Homes website.

        Have you taken action in your home to save energy that you would be willing to share with people? We are too late for this year, but could Thame have some homes featured next year so that others can learn from your experience? If you are interested in getting involved please email [email protected]

        Help to set up Thame's response to a 'Climate Cafe'

        A team of people who are part of Thame's Environmental Forum are exploring how to set up and deliver a Climate Cafe, or similar, in Thame. Discussions have already started on this, but they would love more people to be involved so anyone who wants to play a part please let Becky Reid (Thame Town Council's Environmental Project Officer) know by emailing her at [email protected]

        Could you help to run Cosy Thame

        In the heat we are having at the moment, it is hard to think about staying warm, but the Cosy Thame project is all about encouraging and enabling everyone to look at their home or business premises and work out how to insulate it from the cold. Keep the heat in and keep the fuel bills low.

        The project has a thermal imaging camera provided by Thame Green Living and bought with a grant from Low Carbon Hub Oxford. Each year members of the community are invited to train as a 'Thermal Champion', so that they are then able to use the camera to survey their own home, and homes and business premises of other Thame residents to identify where the property is losing heat, so that the owners can choose to take targeted action to reduce this loss, and therefore reduce their bills.

        Cosy Thame is supported by Thame Town Council, and Cllr David Dawson is able to deliver the training to new Thermal Champions, but the project needs someone to support the administration of the work - organising the training, helping recruit new volunteers, and administrating the booking system for new surveys. If you would be interested in finding out more about this, please contact the team using the form on the Cosy Thame webpage
