In January 2024, Project Butterfly interviewed the three composers who won the open call Marco Attura, Beniamin Baczewski, and Paavo Korpijaakko.

These interviews not only highlight their personal paths but also provide insightful viewpoints on how music, nature, and the changing opera scene converge in contemporary society.

Their thoughts and experiences demonstrate a strong dedication to upholding tradition while embracing new ideas. As we eagerly look forward to their future projects, let's explore the key opera elements that these composers bring to the forefront in their interviews.

In february 2024 the full interviews are finally out on our website!

Students co-create an Opera!

So far, a lot has happened! Students participated in preparatory and co-design meetings with the teachers, group meetings and recently completed creative workshops with local librettists.

Project Butterfly: Boosting environmental awareness in opera creation aims to create a new attitude towards sustainability in theatre and opera houses by exploring new green practices related to opera production and circulation. It all couldn’t happen without our most important partners – students! The project’s main objective is to create a unique opera piece combined with three acts (one for each partner country: Poland, Finland and Italy). The stories that make up the libretto are provided by school students from European partner countries and are dedicated to environmental themes: water, earth and air. The schools were carefully selected and are said to be engaged with Butterfly till 2025.

Students from Modena meet Vincenzo de Vivo

Students of Istituto Selmi in Modena have been actively engaged in developing the storyline from which the opera will originate

The students of Istituto Selmi in Modena, under the guidance of the librettist Vincenzo De Vivo and with the facilitation of #AESS, have completed a creative writing workshop that led them to craft three original stories.

The meeting between the students and de Vivo proved to be an enriching experience, with the seasoned librettist generously sharing his insights and expertise. Together, they discussed the intricacies of character development, plot structure, and the nuanced interplay of music and narrative in opera.

One of these stories will be chosen to become one of the three acts comprising the operatic production of Project Butterfly, scheduled to be staged in 2025!
