News for Action
A bi-monthly newsletter to spread the seeds and connect the dots.

Welcome to our first issue of 2024!

The year has started at full steam and, to look after our multiple demands with self- and mutual care (let’s walk to talk!), we will be issuing our newsletter bi-monthly until we recruit a volunteer editor to take on the task monthly. Get in touch if you are interested!

As discord, conflict, and suffering hold so much attention in London and around the world, it’s vital to keep looking for signs of hope amidst the gloom. We know that there are solutions to the unfortunate events around us.

There is much we can do to enter into a productive dialogue with children, adults, and communities about the surrounding calamities and instil realistic understanding as well as hope for the future. Many of the items in this issue offer opportunities for insight, connection, and resilience building.

A vivid communicator with children, Camila Batmanghelidjh has passed away. As a redoubtable fighter for young people suffering toxic stress, she will be greatly missed. We have selected a tribute to Camila, and share her Ted Talk as a small act of remembrance.

We hope that your start to the New Year has been strong and peaceful, at least in some areas of your life, with a renewed resolution to progress the cause of ACEs prevention.

Expanding ACE-awareness!

We plan to show Resilience, the inspiring documentary about ACEs, in community venues across London. Following the screening, there will be a panel reflection and a dialogue with the audience.

  • If you believe your community would benefit from the learning opportunity, send us a hello!

Meanwhile, there are opportunities to work with the Hub, especially in fundraising and media.

  • How can we create more powerful communications engaging as many Londoners as possible? We welcome contributions from experienced fund-raisers and media activists who share our values.

Please contact us if either of these suggestions appeals to you.

To join our monthly meetings and become part of our network, visit our membership page.

We also accept donations – small or big :). If you are in a position to help us financially so we continue our activities, click Yes, I can!

Our newsletter belongs to all of us. Feel welcome to drop us a line if you have items to share.

The London ACEs Hub pays tribute to Camila Batmanghelidjh's work and profound courage and commitment to raising awareness of the challenges facing young people in deprived households and neighbourhoods in London, and, most importantly, of the pathways to break toxic cycles and make positive changes.

Many members of our LAH Network have been inspired and influenced by Camila's warmth and perseverance.

Jocelyne Quennell, Camila's colleague and LAH Member, states:

"We are bereaved and still absorbing the loss of Camila from our sphere and remembering the importance of her presence in all our lives in different ways."

For inspiration and a reminder of Camila's incredible commitment, check her Ted Talk How to Help our Most Vulnerable Children.

A book by Felicity De Zulueta, Leonor de Escoriaza, Jayshree Unadkat, and Monique Notice. It offers a journey into the human mind in search of an answer to the human paradox: how can we be so loving and also so destructive, to ourselves and to others? The answer: there is no such thing as a human mind; there are in fact many different human mindsets. The way people feel and behave depends so much on how safe they felt in the hands of their parental figures and on the social context in which they are brought up in and live.

A book by Sophie Olson and Patricia Walsh documenting the therapeutic journey undertaken by both of them. “The essence of diversity is the individual's experience of it. Diversity is about personalised shades of experience emanating from universal colours of humanity, but each person takes from the universal what is relevant to them and alters it by their own interpersonal experience.”
