Canine Babesiosis in Europe

Canine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease that affects dogs and is caused by various species of the protozoan genus Babesia. The disease is prevalent worldwide, but data relating to European infections have been collected for many years.

The large and small forms of Babesia species, including B. canis, B. vogeli, B. gibsoni, and B. microti-like isolates (also known as B. vulpes), infect dogs in Europe. However, the geographical distribution, transmission, clinical signs, treatment, and prognosis vary widely for each species.

Species of Babesia in Europe:

  • B. vogeli: Mediterranean basin.
  • B. canis and B. microti-like sp.: Cooler climate zones of north and central Europe
    Image description

Babesia spp., the relevant vectors differ depending on the species:

    • For B. canis, the relevant vector is the tick Dermacentor reticulatus. This tick species has a relatively wide range across Europe and prefers cool and wet climates.
    • Rhipicephalus sanguineus (R. sanguineus) is known to transmit Babesia species such as B. vogeli.
    • In Europe, R. sanguineus may serve as potential vectors for B. gibsoni, while in Asia, the main distribution range is attributed to transmission by the tick Haemaphysalis longicornis.
