Changes to Sectional Qualifications-

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY!

For those of you who didn't hear the good news, FINA has changed the process for qualifying for Sectionals to help include more athletes who compete on some of our most challenging courses! These changes are effective immediately, and are retroactive to the beginning of the season. Here are the new Sectional Qualification rules:

  • FINA will take everyone who successfully clears a course (completes all obstacles in the set time) to Sectionals.  Clearing a Speed course will get you to Speed Sectionals. Clearing an Endurance course will get you to Endurance Sectionals. (this is the same)
  • FINA will take the top three (3) finishers in each division (known as "podium spots") from each Qualifier competition regardless of clear status. Making the podium at a Speed competition will qualify you for Speed Sectionals.  Making the podium at an Endurance competition will qualify you for Endurance Sectionals. (this is new)
    • FINA will NOT bump down names if the podium spots are filled by people who have previously qualified for Sectionals.  Because every athlete has the opportunity to qualify for Sectionals at each competition by beating the course, we do not allow for "bump-down" spots.
  • FINA will take any athlete who accrues 21 or more Speed points over the season to Speed Sectionals.  FINA will take any athlete who accrues 31 or more Endurance points over the season to Endurance Sectionals. (this is the same)

Full lists of athletes who have qualified for Sectionals can be found HERE and are updated weekly.

How do I qualify for Finals?!

You made it to Sectionals!                                                   But how do you get to Anaheim?

The Sectional rules have been set for Season V!

Key points to know:

  • FINA is taking the top four finishers in each division in both Speed and Endurance at each Sectional, regardless of clear status.  Speed and Endurance will be treated as separate competitions in determining the top four finishers.
  • If there are additional full clears, FINA will take UP TO the top eight full clear finishers in each division for both Speed and Endurance, but they must be full course clears.
  • FINA will not take more than eight full course clears from any one division at either a Speed or Endurance Sectional, regardless of the number of full clears.
  • Athletes may compete at multiple Sectionals until they qualify for Finals.  Once they qualify, they may not continue to compete to improve their seeding at Finals. A decision regarding "Recreational" runs at Sectionals for those who have already qualified will be coming soon...
  • Athletes may compete at any Sectional they choose, regardless of location.
  • There is a seeding advantage for fully cleared courses at both a Speed and Endurance Sectional, but there is no seeding advantage for Sectional placement or points earned at Sectionals.
  • FINA will not "bump down" the list for athletes who double qualify (Speed and Endurance) at a Sectional event, or who cannot attend Finals.

Complete details about Sectionals can be found in the Official Rulebook.

The Mysterious "Q"

As many of you have noticed, if you look at the standings for the season on NinjaWorks there seem to be green "Q"s everywhere; and some of them seem to be out of place. With the addition of podium spots for Sectionals, as well as the request to show an athlete's Qualified status on all lists related to a competition, NinjaWorks is currently unable to show the separate Speed and Endurance qualification status of each athlete and instead shows their general status (i.e., if they have qualified for a Speed OR Endurance Sectionals).  NinjaWorks is currently working on this, and hopes to have it resolved shortly. We will keep you all posted!

To help with any confusion, there is a full spreadsheet of all Sectionals qualifiers on the website (fina.ninja) under Qualifiers Update 2024 where you can search your athlete's eligibility for both Speed and Endurance Sectionals by last name or by competition (this spreadsheet is updated weekly).  In addition, if you hover over the green Q on the Standings page in NinjaWorks, it will tell you whether the athlete has qualified in Speed or Endurance. We will send out an update as soon as the "Q" issue is resolved.  But until then, please refer to the spreadsheet on the website (HERE) for the official listing of Speed and Endurance Sectionals qualified athletes!

Who are these people?  Meet the team!
