Welcome to Nourish News - January 2024

Image description

T’is the season of new calendars. The team at Nourish is busily filling them with plans: for a new series of webinars related to the healthy nourishment of children and youth, opportunities to engage with schools and communities in different corners of Nova Scotia, and deadlines of various sorts.

2024 also begins with unresolved pain and violence, including for children and youth suffering from dire food insecurity because of war, and unresolved worry for all youth who wonder when they’ll see adequate action on our climate emergency.

In this challenging context, Nourish is relaunching Grow Eat Learn, our school community garden program that hit rocky soil in 2020. School gardens are linked to better academic performance, and nutritional, mental, and physical health. We look forward to supporting gardens and other naturalized, climate-resilient spaces where children and youth can develop food skills, explore climate science and feel a sense of belonging.

Warmly,

Image description

Nourish staff and volunteers are once again lacing up for the 2024 Blue Nose Marathon.

Taking place from May 17-19, this is our largest fundraising event of the year. Last year you helped us raise almost $8,000 to support healthy school food programs across the province, and we need your help again!

We also welcome other teams to join us! Might your workplace run (or walk?) in the Bluenose for Nourish? Thanks to virtual options, you can participate from anywhere in Nova Scotia and support our mission: of creating healthy food environments for children and youth in partnership with schools and communities.

Advocating for school food investment

"School food won’t solve food insecurity, but it will take pressure off household budgets while improving children’s health, education and long-term economic outcomes."

As we make progress toward a federally funded school food program, the Coalition for Healthy School Food has received many questions surrounding the implementation. This article answers some of those questions.

Nourish is a founding member of the Coalition for Healthy School Food and hosts its Nova Scotia chapter.

Recipe: Morning Glory Muffins

These freeze well for breakfast. Try baking them on sheets pans rather than in muffin tins to make clean up a breeze and allow for flexible portion sizes.

Cut five rows lengthwise and seven on the short size to produce 35 breakfast squares or aim for 48 (6 x 8 ) smaller ones.

Learning Corner: Body Language Matters

This time of year is loud with talk about diets, exercise, and our bodies. How food and bodies are discussed impacts our relationship with ourselves and with others. If you aren't happy with the impacts of this language, consider trying the ideas below.
