A special message from Nigel's wife:

I am reaching out to you in the hope that you can help me contact members of the Romsey and District Society from the 1980s, when my husband Nigel Bachmann was Vice Chairman. Sadly Nigel passed away suddenly on 9th September.

The funeral will take place at the Test Valley Crematorium on 3rd October at 3pm. Details of the service and donations in Nigel’s memory can be found at https://nigelwernerrogerbachmann.muchloved.com/

Kind regards,

Judith Bachmann

Membership List Update

The RDS Membership List is being Reviewed. With such a large Database, some mistakes may inevitably have crept in. If the Newsletter has not been correctly addressed to you, can you please notify the Membership Secretary of any corrections – [email protected]We apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused.

Do you know about GIS mapping?

We need a volunteer with an expertise in using GIS mapping to help us map Green Corridors.

Image description

The Natural Environment Committee have for some time been mapping ecological corridors that we should preserve and promote so that wildlife has the means to move between the little areas of green space left after development. This is currently mapped on a NEXTGIS, paid for system and we lack the expertise to update it and possibly transfer it to a free mapping system.  If you can help us, please contact Nick Hutson at [email protected]

Ampfield Walk

Image description
Image description
Image description

On Wednesday 20th September a group of intrepid Romsey and District Society walkers set out in high winds, with the threat of rain, on a 4-mile stroll from the White Horse pub in Ampfield along the lesser used paths. The rectangular route took the group through Ampfield Wood to Slackstead, round the edge of the public access wood, back via Knapp Lane and the little nature wood around Ampfield Church. There was a moment’s reflection at the memorial to some World War Two American Airmen, before returning to the White Horse for lunch. The weather was timed beautifully as, after a dry walk, it poured with rain an arrival at the pub.

Thanks to Nick Hutson for leading and the members for braving the weather.
