Aloha from Corteva Agriscience!

NEWS FROM OUR FARMS

Corteva Hawai‘i Recognized as 2023 Water Conservationist of the Year

West Kauai Soil & Water Conservation District recognized Corteva Agriscience as the 2023 Water Conservationist of the Year for its continued conservation efforts ensuring resiliency within agricultural operations as well and being good stewards to the land. In recent years, Corteva Hawai‘i focused on several practices including maintaining field buffers, planting cover crop into their crop rotation, maintaining vegetative barriers, and installing grassed waterways. Our agronomy team plans and prepares fields needed for that season, reducing unvegetated areas that can contribute to erosion.

The team has also planted windbreaks and other plantings that can assist with water use efficiency and plant health. These practices have been proven effective to greatly reduce erosion, especially as damage from heavy rain has been less than expected. Corteva Hawai‘i is constantly working toward incorporating conservation technologies to minimize their environmental impacts. The team at Corteva Hawai‘i is grateful for the West Kauai SWCD’s collaboration and recognition of our efforts and our commitment to enabling more sustainable outcomes for the future.

Corteva helps to preserve historical landmark Pa‘ula‘ula

On Oct. 19, the Hawaii Research team sent a crew of 17 to assist in the removal of debris that had overgrown the historic landmark known as Pa'ula'ula. This ruined fort, built in 1817, was used by King Kaumuali’i and the Kingdom of Hawai’i until it was dismantled in 1864. Now a Hawai'i State Park, the star-shaped fort and nearby statue commemorate an important part of Kauai's heritage. This effort was in partnership with a local non-profit agency, Friends of Kaumuali'i, in preparation for an upcoming archaeological study by the University of Hawaii, as well as educational public use. Mahalo to our Corteva Hawai‘i Research Center employees who helped with these efforts!

Meet Paul Gamit, who celebrated

30 years at Corteva Hawai‘i!

We’re excited to congratulate Paul on his 30th anniversary with Corteva Hawai‘i! He started working in the seed industry in November 1993, which was then Cargill Hybrid Seeds on Moloka‘i. Currently, Paul is responsible for the DH seedling house, which includes all DH production in the shade houses. Back in 1993, he started in the field, pollinating and harvesting corn. Paul eventually learned how to operate tractors, planters, maintenance and some fabrication work. When Parent Seed started on Moloka‘i, he was an assistant and after about a year, Paul started managing Parent Seed.

After Parent Seed moved to Kaua‘i, he also relocated and dabbled in a little bit of everything, including Trait Integration work, male sterile production, regulatory hybrid production, and working with mainland sites such as partner nurseries to compare flowering notes of different inbreds.

Prior to Corteva, Paul worked during the summers with a local potato and watermelon farm on Moloka‘i. He enjoys working for Corteva because it gives him the opportunity to travel and learn different cultures and styles of seed production. Paul looks forward to continuing to do the best he can to help improve the quality of seed production and hitting specific targets.

On his free time, Paul likes to spend time with family and friends, camping, hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Mahalo, Paul, for being part of the Corteva Hawai‘i ‘ohana for 30 years!
