Nourish supports food work in Mi'kma'ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq, across five regions (Kespukwitk, Sɨpekne'katik, Eskikewa'kik, Unama'kik, and Piktuk)

Welcome to Nourish News - December 2023

At this most wonderful time of the year, many families are struggling to eat well. Nourish is a founding member of the Coalition for Healthy School Food, which advocates for a federal investment in universal breakfast and lunch programs that could save families about $150 per child in monthly grocery bills. Canada remains the only G7 country without a national school food program, though a private member’s bill to establish one just passed second reading in Parliament.

Across Nova Scotia, there are inspiring examples of school food programs. But there are also schools without adequate kitchens and, without significant fundraising by parents, most don’t have enough budget to sustain breakfast programs – let alone lunch and snack – throughout the school year.

Thanks to donors large and small, Nourish is now able to support modest food projects in schools and communities that hit this sweet spot:

Nourish will also be re-launching our school community garden program, Grow Eat Learn (which hit rocky COVID soil in 2020) in the New Year. To support our work – and promote long-term healthy eating for children and youth across Nova Scotia, please consider becoming a monthly donor, inviting a contact to subscribe to our e-newsletter, or sharing one of your favourite Nourish resources.

Warmly,

Nourish in the Community! @ Joseph Howe Elementary

Nourish has been supporting Joseph Howe Elementary since the beginning of the school year as a connector between the school and community organizations, by enabling the creation and coordination of a hot lunch served once a week by Loaded Ladle and St. George's YouthNet, by regularly baking muffins and other breakfast items, and supporting the school with its volunteer engagement needs.

Thank you to Feed Nova Scotia for funding this new work of Community Food Facilitation through an innovation grant.

Staff Spotlight - Welcome Ben Elliott!

Ben joined our team in November as our Communications and Engagement Assistant. He has been living in Mi’kma’ki since 2019 but grew up just north of London, Ontario.

He completed his undergrad at the University of Waterloo, then after moving to Nova Scotia, got his Bachelors and Masters degrees in journalism from the University of King’s College.

We asked Ben a few questions to get to know him better.

Looking to try a new recipe over the holidays?

This slow cooker chicken noodle soup only needs about 20 minutes of prep and can be left to cook all day so it'll be ready to serve in the evening.

(It also works with turkey if that's what you have in access to!)

Learning Corner

Through programs and resources, Nourish seeks to support the healthy nourishment of children and youth. But what do we mean by healthy eating? Countless “diet gurus” and nutrition vloggers have their own ideas. Through much conversation, consultation and word-smithing, our Communication Team (involving staff and volunteers) drafted our statement on healthy eating:

Healthy eating involves a variety of foods that make us feel good and give us energy to do the things we love. There are no good or bad foods. Healthy eating includes sharing food experiences with others. Healthy foods nourish our body, mind, and spirit.
