MANIFEST Artistic Residency in Hungary Recap

Greetings art and cultural heritage enthusiasts!

We are thrilled to present the highlights of the first stop of the MANIFEST Artistic Journey in Zsennye, Hungary. It was a remarkable experience of creativity, enrichment, and profound connections for our talented artists.

The MANIFEST Residency in Hungary was organised and hosted by Project partner Pro Progressione. What a unique, mysterious, and beautiful backdrop for creativity to flourish!

See below a very poetic recap of the time spent by the artists from one of the brilliant artists Jaqueline Zamora (@zzamoree), who captured the soul of the residency amidst magnificent scenery. Jaqueline's heartful caption expressed gratitude for the shared experience and the joy of witnessing the power of art in connecting souls. We're happy to share her beautiful photographs, celebrating her artistic journey as it continues.

Representatives from the Consortium behind the Project, joined the residency at various points along the way to provide consultation and support around historical topics, conceptualisation and design of the Artworks, communication, and dissemination needs, and of course to be part of an evolving and supportive community ready to create impact through art!

This included project coordinators and co-production co-lead KHORA, leaders of the upcoming Artistic Residency in Lisbon, and co-production leads Gerador leaders of the historical Pillar, and hosts of the 2024 final event in Nantes Les Anneaux de la Mémoire, alongside project co-leads and leaders of communication and dissemination CUMEDIAE.

Overall, the activities included lectures delving into the transatlantic trade's impact by representatives of Les Anneaux de la Mémoire and Pro Progressione and included discussions on artists' identities by artist Borsos Lőrinc. József Mélyi's green artistic practices offered new avenues for exploration while consultations with Khora and Gerador inspired innovative approaches to storytelling using AR/VR and audiovisual production.

THE IMAGE OF THE “OTHER”: REPRESENTATIONS OF AFRICANS AND WEST INDIANS IN EUROPE

Throughout history, Africans have been depicted in European art as symbols of exoticism and distant lands. From the Middle Ages, these depictions carried contradictory perceptions. In modern times, the concept of the "enslaved African person" emerged, shaped by notions of race, conquest, and imperial domination.

THE CHALLENGES AROUND THE REMEMBRANCE OF ATLANTIC TRADE AND ENSLAVEMENT IN EUROPE

In the late 20th century, Europe began acknowledging its role in the Atlantic slave trade and colonial enslavement. This led to the establishment of museums, memorials, and national policies addressing historical injustices and the fight against anti-Black racism.

A PORTRAIT: DODSHON FOSTER (1730-1793), A BRITISH SLAVE TRADER

This entry describes a typical British merchant who invested in the slave trade over several voyages and made his fortune therein. While his actions were not condemned in his time, modern perspectives recognize the atrocities of this trade and condemn Foster's involvement such as Sue Flowers in her artwork "One Tenth".
