Social worker's outreach aims to get people into treatment


Licensed social worker Teri Dose, who works with the Diversity, Equity, and Community Outreach team in Olmsted County, N.Y., responds to reported drug overdoses each week, works to build relationships and rapport with people who had an overdose and offers loved one resources for support. Dose says an initial successful outreach led to the person remaining sober for the past year and that people overall have responded positively even if they aren't ready for treatment.

What needs to change in child welfare


The child welfare workforce suffers from high turnover rates largely due to lack of resources and capacity, which leave workers struggling to juggle their high caseloads, in addition to low wages and high stress, argues Kelly Harder, who has a master's degree in social work. Some ideas to address these issues include rethinking case flow to identify working or nonworking practices and using technology to automate some manual processes, which could reduce workers' time investigating cases, benefiting agencies and the US' most vulnerable children, Harder writes.
