Dear all,

This month has been an important moment for MANIFEST. We had our introductory online meetings with all the artists to discuss our first upcoming artistic residency. Our team also continues working on the Resources publications and share the knowledge about the transatlantic trade of enslaved people. You will find new articles covering the absence of memorial sites in Portugal, actors in the fight for enslaved people's lives and legacies of the transatlantic trade on our website.

The 30th of April marks International Jazz Day, recognised for promoting peace, cultural dialogue, diversity and respect for human rights. MANIFEST  created "The Blueprint: a story of Jazz&Rap evolutions in the post-slavery world" playlist, highlighting jazz's role in bringing people together and raising awareness of the need for intercultural exchange and understanding of the transatlantic slave trade

This April, we had our first online meetings with all the artists and collectives, behind the 12 selected projects, for MANIFEST Artistic Residencies.

We all got to know each other a little better. During this meeting, with the support of CUMEDIAE and Les Anneaux de la Mémoire, our partners Pro ProgressioneKhora and Gerador gave a detailed presentation about the first artistic residency in Budapest that will happen in June.

You can also meet our artists by keeping an eye on our social media as we progressively present our artists, where you can learn more about them, their opinions, influences and fun facts!

Our carefully curated selection, inspired by our article "From Jazz to Rap, Perspectives and Musical Evolutions in the Post-Slavery world, from the United States to Europe" features some of our favourite jazz tracks from across the decades.

"The Blueprint: a story of Jazz&Rap evolutions in the post-slavery world" showcases the genre's diverse range of sounds and styles. Whether you're a long-time jazz fan or new to the scene, we hope this playlist brings you joy and inspiration.

In honour of International Jazz Day, which fell on April 30th, we asked our social media subscribers to share their favourite jazz and rap pieces with us and created a dedicated playlist with them. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the power of jazz to unite and uplift people worldwide and check the playlists and share your favourite songs with us. ⬇️

News from the MANIFEST Network

Our partner Les Anneaux de la Mémoire, is organising several events next month in honour of the National French Day of Remembrance of the Enslave Trade, Slavery and its abolition, in Nantes. A collaboration with Mémoire de l'Outre-Mer and CRHIA de Nantes Université in Nantes.

The 2nd edition of "History in Images: Slavery", Tuesday 9 May at 6pm at the Archives Départementales de Loire-Atlantique.
Eight historians will decipher and comment on an image of their choice on the theme of slavery. This flash-conference allows, in a dynamic format, to better understand the different realities of the slave trade, slavery and emancipation, which are revealed by certain images.

Photographic exhibition in Château des Ducs de Bretagne from 22 April to 18 May 2023.

"Tan fè tan, tan kité tan" by Sylvain Demange, is an expression which comes from the Creole language and means “time does its works”.

From the West Indies to France, this exhibition invites us to question the legacy of a collective French history: the history of colonial slavery.

Round Table about "Slavery: memories and legacy in question", in Château des Ducs de Bretagne on 11 May at 6:30 pm.

During this discussion, Sylvain Demange, artist, Myriam Cottias, historian, George Pau-Langevin, former Minister and Deputy Ombudsman, and Aimé Charles-Nicolas, psychiatrist, will question the memories and legacies of the transatlantic slave trade and colonial slavery, particularly in the overseas territories.

Save the date, so you don't miss out on these incredible events!
