United Against the Death Penalty

Newsletter April 17th, 2023

This has been a difficult week and our hearts are with those who are impacted by the death penalty in any way.

Our little group is slowly growing (please talk about us around you, especially if you are in Florida) and our articles of incorporation have been submitted. We are now officially a non-profit organization.

Louis Gaskin

Louis Gaskin was affectionately known as TipToe by those on the row and he was one who was able to change the whole mood back there. He was a changed man.
After 3 decades on death row, he was executed on Wednesday April 12th and declared dead at 6:15 pm.

Capital Sentencing and Capital Sex Crimes Bills

2 horrific bills passed the House last week:

The bill HB 555, that reduces the standard necessary to impose a sentence of death from unanimity to 8-4, passed by a vote of 80-30.
The bill HB 1297 - for capital sex-crimes (to expand the death penalty to child sex crimes) - passed by a vote of 95-14.

The Senate will hear HB 1297 tomorrow but HB 555 is expected to be signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis this week.
