Opportunities for Undergraduates

The NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR) are pleased to launch two career development opportunities for undergraduate student - the Student Internship Programme and the George Lewith Prize.

The Student Internship Programme provides students with experience in a research environment and access to a team of specialised mentors and supervisors. All internship projects are offered as virtual opportunities or in-person at the relevant university. The programme is open to all undergraduate students, from any degree based at a UK university. More information on the projects can be found on the SPCR website

The George Lewith Prize is an essay competition for UK medical students. The winner receives their registration fees for the Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) annual scientific meeting, held this year from the 18-20 July. For full details on how to apply see the SPCR website:

The functions of self-harm in young people

Self-harm in young people is a serious concern but a deeper understanding of the functions of self-harm can tailor care and inform new clinical interventions to reduce repeat self-harm and suicide risk in young people. In the UK one in five young people who self-harm in general practice, repeat self-harm the following year. Reducing rates of self-harm in young people is an international priority.

In a recent qualitative study, supported by the SPCR, Faraz Mughal and colleagues interviewed 13 young people, aged between 16 and 25 years, with a personal history of self-harm. Interviews were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.

DIPP study

Guidelines to speed up the diagnosis and treatment of patients with nerve swelling at the back of the eye, known as papilloedema, are being developed by researchers at the University of Bristol.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) funded ‘Improving the Diagnostic accuracy of referrals for Papilloedema’ (DIPP) Study aims to address these problems by developing and evaluating a set of guidelines for GPs and optometrists to improve the accuracy of diagnostic referrals.

Dr Alyson Huntley, NIHR School for Primary Care Research Fellow and co-lead of the study based at the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol, added: “The strength of the DIPP study is that we are taking an integrated approach involving health professionals and the public across the eye care pathway. We are also looking at the situation nationally to provide recommendations for service improvement across England.”

Be Part of Research – The new service making it easier to recruit participants

The new ‘Be Part of Research Volunteer Service’ can help studies by putting researchers in contact with people who have expressed an interest in a specific area of research. The service makes it easier for researchers to find participants, and for participants to find suitable research opportunities.

Studies on the NIHR CRN portfolio, or those that are NIHR-funded, are potentially able to use the service.

NIHR Funding Opportunities

Advanced Local Authority Fellowship (ALAF) Scheme

Part of the Local Authority Academic Fellowship (LAAF) Programme, these fully funded post-doctoral fellowships will support doctorate holders to undertake further research and research training, while remaining employed within, or at least salaried to work in support of, a local authority setting.
